I am just adding this thought as this is what is happening at the following cemeteries in the area:? Mt Moriah , Greenmount , Northwood, among others.? Way back when at the cemetery's start the plot was layed out with Lots and Roads etc.? Over the years Lots were sold and filled.? Soon the cemetery was just about filled, In order to keep afloat, and have a cemetery still operating, they did away with some of the paths and roads, and sold Lots in these sections.?
The lot behind mine in Northwood was sold 11

Heard from him about 3 weeks ago when, after about 6 e-mails to his personal account, he answered that it was ok to send him the two databases I had that were complete.? Don't know anything else.? but he was in contact.

Karen, could you forward me those pics by chance? Would love to see where
lot 189 was so I can determine where 291 would probably be.

Police do drive through the cemetery, and in the area. I have had
conversations with them. Stolen cars do wind up in the cemetery, but
this should not come as a surprise, since the cemetery gates are always
open.
You should always use caution when visiting the cemetery; I recommend
the following when planning a trip:
- go with at least one other person
- bring a cellphone with you
- make someone not with you aware of your plan and the timeline for it;
make a plan to call them at a planned time
This will most likely be my last trip up there for the year. I tried calling the office last week (Tuesday at 7:30AM and Friday at 1:30PM), indicating I would be up there today. Neither call prompted a return call, and upon arrival there today there was nothing at all marked for us at all within section 200. There was also noone in the office- there was a blue pickup truck that was there briefly upon arrival, however it was gone shortly after we arrived. We got there around 11-11:30AM and were there unt

I didn't go this this year, but two years ago their tombstone was still there, but shinking. there was also a police car driving through the cemetery, even at 10 a.m. in the morning.
It flooded a couple years ago according to some pictures on the internet......
I looked at a photograph I took in 1989 and there's a Harriett Watling nearby.

He definitely did mention Mount Moriah, and the Friends of Mt. Moriah, too.
It was a really excellent talk, inspiring!

Actually during our last trip there on Columbus Day, there was a cop parked
in the cemetery for most of the time we were there. It actually made the
visit a very nice one.
The more cemeteries I see, the more appalled I am at Mount Moriah- there are
2 cemeteries that I pass now on my way home from work in Baltimore, and
one's even in a really ghetto-ish section of Baltimore.. even though the
area is that way, the cemetery still looks nicely maintained. I just don't
get it with Mount Moriah- it's to
Hi Carole,
Funny you should mention that- when I got home from the cemetery yesterday, I was so livid that I sat down, drafted a letter, and looked up the mailing address for Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia. The letter contained what I'd experienced with the cemetery, as well as the fact that others were very unhappy with what was going on. I also included the link to the documentary. It went on its way to Philly this morning. We'll see if anyone even bothers to respond to me.

Hi Carol,
Actually John just posted a response in the Forums at the
mountmoriahcemetery.org site. Maybe you can post your questions to him
there?

I'm concerned about obits and pictures of gravestones I sent in to John Ellingsworth. He was going to enlist help in setting up an excel file of names of people buried in Mt. Moriah. Then he would put it on the website. I have written to him several times, but no answer. I wonder if he is ok. Has anyone else heard from him?

JB,
Been there done that!
30 years ago my wife and I went to Mt. Moriah and with no trouble located the late 19th century graves of her grandparents and family. several years ago I tried to locate those very same markers with no luck. I had no trouble locating where they should have been but there they were not. Now they may well have been included with the many overturned and upside down monuments that could not be read. There were no new burials in their place,.
The cemetery had taken on the look of

I was surprised to find this today, and a little disappointed to think I
might have missed it.
Hopefully Tom will also mention the trends that contribute towards
losing a cemetery, and mentioning our beloved Mount Moriah.

As I mentioned in another post, I called the cemetery 2x this week, hoping to get lot 291 of section 200 marked. I got the voice mail both times, and left a message but sadly never heard back.
This is really important to me so I'm going tomorrow regardless and am hoping they at least marked the section and didn't blow me off. In the meantime, is there anyone at all who can help me identify where lot #291 is in section 200?
Also, if anyone needs any pics taken or anything checked, I will do what I can whil
Thank you Ted.

Matter of Fact, no I haven't heard from him. And come to think of it, I
wrote it a couple of weeks ago to tell him about going back in late fall to
my Section 205, lot #82, and taking a weed whacker with us. We tried in July
it is 8'-12'+ high in growth and so thick. And he never did answer me. Also
I did a large section on the excel sheet for him on burials.
I hope all is fine with him!

I'm not getting e-mails the day they're sent, so I didn't receive this until 10/13. A few more of the Rootsweb list posts just hit my e-mail, and they too were dated a day prior to receipt. Perhaps others have the problem too?
Was the section cleared when you got there?

Unless something drastic happens between now and 11/4, I will be heading up to the Phila Historical Society do to some research after I vote that day. I called today and they will be open, so I wanted to pass that on to anyone else who might need to capitalize on the time off if they have it.

I am still here, albeit a little busy.
If you have sent something to me, I still have it - I just haven't
gotten to it, but I will shortly.
For future reference, you should always consider the use of this mailing
list and the forums on the website for finding and sharing information.
I put everything I can find on the website, so if it isn't there then
I don't have it - but someone else might. The future of the cemetery
requires a group effort, might as well start online.
