Denise:
Thanks so much for this information on my grandfather. The "Helen" who was
17 at the time was my mother, who died three years ago at 97.

Denise,
I am new in this group so I don't know what the proper "netiquette" is for
asking questions. I'm looking for my great-grandparents. I believe they
lived on South Street. Their names are Joseph and Lena Wexler. I believe
Joseph was born in 1879. So that would make him 41 in 1920.
They had seven children. I can give you their names if that would help.
Thanks,
Adrienne

Does anyone know what Long Lane is now?
Some kind soul found one of my maternal great-great grandfathers William Dunbar, in the 1880 census, which listed his occupation as "carter."
I looked in the 1880 City Directory and found one William Dunbar who is listed as a "carman" which is the same as a carter. The address is given as "Long Lane near Mifflin." I know where Mifflin is, having lived in S. Philly
the first 44 years of my life, but Long Lane I am not familiar with.
Anyone know what that street i
I am looking for anything on Thomas and Agnes Reed. They had two known daughters Mary (1868 - 1911) and Elizabeth known as "Aunt Bess." Mary married my great-grandfather George Bowman, and Elizabeth married an Unknown Rowland.
According to censes records Thomas was born in New York and Agnes in Ireland.
Anyone else searching this family?

I know this is off-topic, but:
String Band Parade will take place on Sunday, April 28 beginning at 2:00 pm in Gloucester City, NJ. It will travel south on Broadway.
Food and vendor tables will open at 12:30 pm.
Hi Joan:
I see you are researching the Bowman Family: There was a Dr. Bowman that
own and operated a drug store at Croskey St, and Snyder Ave. He was a very
nice man and our neighborhood depended on him for various medical needs. He
helped all of us at one time or another and I might add no charge. I don't
think you would have that today.
He was a very gracious person.

oooooooooooo
The best source to look in is Barkers (Cemetery Works?).
You can find this at the Phila. City archives, HSP/GSP.
For details see on line catalog at www.hsp.org
It includes a map of Phila. Cemeteries.

Just a note the 1966 map is going to be down for a few hours for techincal
problems -- i.e. the page designer has no idea what she is doing! My site
is a learn as I go sort of experience!

Hi Frank:
Are you related to any McKnight's that lived in the 20 hundred block of
Croskey.
That wound be between 22 nd and 23 rd sts between Synder Ave and Mifflin St.
or it could be McKean.
It has been along time since I was there. That is where I grew up.

Dear Denise,
If possible, please look up George L. Figenshu, who would have been between
60 and 65 in 1920. I'm not sure where he was living at the time; could have
been around 20th St.
Thanks so much for your help.

I wonder if anyone has any information about New Philadelphia cemetery,
which is no longer in existence. My great-grandfather, Lawrence
Fiegenschuh, was buried there in 1872; it was located at 3rd & Washington.
Does anyone have any idea where those interned would have been relocated?
(Possibly, the cemetery was simply "built over.") Has anyone ever heard of
"New Philadelphia Cemetery?" Any clues as to how I might go about pursuing
a record of it?
Thanks for any help you can give.

The map that shows New Phila. Cemetery came from Jonathan Sheppard Books.
It is part of a set of two Phila. maps, for 1872 & 1879 -- the 1879 map goes
only as far south as Snyder, so it shows only the northwestern tip of the
cemetery, but the 1872 map shows all of south Phila. and all of the cemetery.
On those maps, New Phila. Cemetery is labeled as simply Philadelphia
Cemetery, its official name. There was a cemetery bordered by 9th, 10th,
Fitzwater and Bainbridge Sts., also officially named "
Denise,
Thank you for the information on the Wexlers. I talked to my mother and she
had forgotten that her mother's name was originally Rebecca. I guess when
the family came to America they changed her name to Betty and that is how I
always knew her.
She is checking with her cousin because we know Sarah Wexler from your
research as Shirley.
I just started this research and it's really enjoyable. Thank you for your
help.

Yes, you did have to be of German descent to attend that school/church.
St. Alphonsus closed in 1972. The building was torn down in the early 1980s
to make room for an addition to Albert Einstein Hospital (South).
