Genealogy not only aquaints us with our ancestors, but provides family medical histories for us too; which provides better care for us as well as our descendants. As I gather the medical history of my ancestors I have added that information to my own medical history as well, stating whether diagnoses are on the maternal or paternal side, or both. A typed list of all your meds, surgeries, illnesses and family history not only helps doctors in their care, but it sure makes it easier when visiting a ne
4. Re: [PABERKS] pronunciation [1]
The answer is it depends on where your German ancestors lived. This is the result of the Althochdeutsche Lautverschiebung, or Old High German Sound Shift, that began in the southern part of Germany (where the elevation is high, hence "High German") and progressed northward toward the North Sea and the Baltic Sea (where the elevation is low, hence "Low German"). In between is Middle German, and that is the area where most of our Pennsylvania German ancestors came from. This sound shift took place between

Ron asked: > Are there any Hershey families on the list? > Are any related to Christian W. Hershey who died in 1946? Ron, Sony formatted my hard drive, despite my plea to leave it intact, so I lost everything this past January. For that reason, I cannot check to see if I was in touch with you about the Hersheys. I am sorry, then, if we did this already and I forgot, but I would rather give you the information twice than not at all. A few years ago I bought (at a local NJ flea market) a ca. 19teens-1

Hi all, My 2 cents worth, In my Meyer Genealogy (Can be seen at Tulpehockenroots.org) I go back to a Jacob Pfeiffer born in 1730. In my research I have found both spellings Pfeiffer and Peiffer. I always thought that these were simply alternate spellings the same as Meyer and Moyer being the most common for my name. Don

15. [PABERKS] Anna Catharine WEISER [1]
Hello Betty, I did not see your original request for a lookup on Anna Catherine Weiser, which you apparently posted on the Berks Co. ListServ, so I am trying to reply to you via the ListServ. Perhaps the following from page 526 of THE WEISER FAMILY, published in 1960 by The John Conrad Weiser Family Assn., will provide something you do not have: "Anna Catharine Weiser, daughter of Frederick and (Anna) Amelia (Zeller) Weiser, was born April 19, 1760, on the Weiser farm at Womelsdorf. 16. [PABERKS] Maiden Creek Bradley [1]
Greetings, I am researching Dominic Bradley who was possibly born in Pennsylvania in 1856. One source has it that he was born at or near Maiden Creek in Berks County. Another source says he was born in "Little Chester". I have never been able to locate "Little Chester". I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on finding any kind of record of him or his family. He had siblings born in Pennsylvania all during the 1850's. I found him in the 1860 Ohio census. Father's name is also Dominic and mother is N
17. [PABERKS] Fritztown township? Jacob Ruth [1]
I'm trying to find an 1860 Berks County census listing for Jacob Ruth and wife Elizabeth, daughter "Polly Victoria" in Fritztown, PA. Does anyone know the township for Fritztown (south of Wernersville, southwest of Reading) in Berks County? While I'm at it, here is my brick wall: Polly Victoria Ruth b. Nov. 17, 1855 in Fritztown, PA, Berks County (accdg to death cert.) to parents Jacob Ruth

Mary Lou and Doraine - - - your list of family diseases is a great idea !! and one I will put together for myself and children for future reference. Doraine, I am so sorry to hear about your kidney disease --- hope all is functioning well now. As for the ailment having come with the German ancestors, death records indicate that my grandfather's mother and (paternal) grandmother had kidney disease in addition to other debilitating factors, and they were 100% Irish !! 22. Re: [PABERKS] 1850 Census Question [1]
Mike & Steve, Sometimes the "holes" are just a result of a name being spelled differently. Just last night I was looking for a Christian Borger in Snyder County and found him recorded as "Christian Burger." The solution in that case is to use the Soundex feature in ancestry.com or rootsweb.com, which permits you to locate sound-alike names. In other cases, transcribers misread names when they are constructing an index. Often this is due to sloppy handwriting in the census forms themselves. For example
