I had corresponded with Ann Brownlee (author of the web site on the
Battle of Shallow Ford, NC) about another matter (see subject below). I
mentioned that my John Pace (w/Sarah Burge) had died at the Battle of
Shallow Ford, we believe. See her response below. I will type up for
her the petition of BURWELL PACE to have John Pace's land restored (from
Bruce Howard's book), but it might be helpful if Jim or Jonathan Pace
(or another interested Pace) could scan the pages of Bruce Howard's
documentation on

The Jesse Pace who m. Mourning Adams was the Jesse who was son of John and
Nanny Pace of Fluvanna Co. Jesse's brothers were William B., John Jr. and

The Jesse F. Pace b. 1825 was a son of Jesse Pace, Jr b. abt 1788 and

In regard to John Hartwell Pace, there were three Hartwell Paces in Virginia
in the early 1800's. Their ancestry is known but not their descendants.

I will leave for the summer on Thursday. Any items for PacePix or the Pace

George and Mabel:
Thanks for the additional info. After reviewing this info, my database and
some census records it is obvious that my previous suggestion of George
Spencer Pace, Sr.'s ancestry was incorrect.
The following is what I believe is the correct ancestry, beginning with the
third generation from Richard Pace of Jamestown.
3. Richard Pace II b. 1637 m. Mary Baker
4. James Pace b. 1666 m. Elizabeth Lowe
5. George Pace b. abt 1685 Charles City Co, VA, d. 1743 Edgecombe Co, NC, m.
Obedience.
Gordon,
Somewhere earlier someone was wanting to know about an Octavia PACE. I
found this one by accident in Franklin County, AL (Hovater Cemetery).
Octavia Pace Hovater, b. Apr. 22, 1841, d. Apr. 28, 1923. She was married to
Calvin Luther Hovater. Their children were Jesse Louis, William Clauborne,
Susan L., Calvin Dallas, Sidney D., Evey, Andy C., Albert Ned, Clifton Coley,
James Arthur, and Frank Little.
I am a new member of the Pace Society and Octavia PACE may fit into my
family some

I have the children of Alsey Pace and Zilpha Hall (of Johnston Co, NC) as:
Abner b. 1821, Wiseman b. 1825, Noah b. 1828, Needham b. 1829, Madison b.
1830, Lively (female) b. abt 1831, Young b. 1834 and David b. 1836.
For the children of Alsey Pace and Cassandra Dean I have David b. 1840,
Harriet b. 1842, Obedience b. 1845, Rhinison b. 1847 and Sally b. 1850.
I am not sure that Noah and Madison were his sons. This may be based only on
their proximity in census records. If these were the same Alse
Dear Gordon,
I too have wondered about ALSEY PACE having two sons named David, one by
Zilpha Hall Pace and the other by Cassandra Dean Pace. I can't explain
it, unless one of the census reports is incorrect as to David's location
in 1860, the only census report where he is shown living with Alsey
Pace. Maybe David moved around. One time around 1846 Abner Pace was
paid money every quarter for taking care of his handicapped brother
David Pace (in Guilford Co. Wardens of the Poor records I have), but I

My Hardy wasn't born until 1843 and died aft 1920. However in the Pace
family there is a recurrence of the name Hardy, so I think there is probably
a distant connection. Hardy's older brother, my Ggrandfather William Matthew
Pace fought with the KY 15th Cavalry at the battles of Atlanta, Resaca and
Louisville, GA.

Norma Barnard sent me the following inquiry:
Gordon, It was John G. (Gilbert) Pace I was inquiring about. He was my
grandfather and son of Zachariah and Lydda. I was wondering when they moved
to MO and then when John Gilbert moved on to Oklahoma. Don't suppose those
records are available yet. Maybe someone else out there would know something
of John Gilbert and his siblings.....
Norma:
John's parents and siblings were still in Kentucky in 1880 on the Magoffin
County census. John married in 1903
I'm researching MARY (POLLY) GROOM who md. JOHN PACE and settled in Clark
Co.KY. John was the son of Murray Pace.
IWho were Mary/Polly Groom's parents? Do you have any earlier
generations of this Groom line and also of her mother's line?
>From a Wilkerson descendent I received the following :
There is a book titled" My Wife's Family" by Noah
H. Bradley. In this book it indicated as follows:
Betsy Wilkerson(note spelling) married John Pace?Peace
on Dec. 20,1803.
Her parents were Jarrett(or Garrodd)Wilkerson(note spelling)
born 1755 and Nancy(Ann) Perkins, who were married
in Goochland Co.Va. on May 9,1774.
Is this the same Betsy Wilkinson who married
John Pace Jr. in 1803. . I think I understand that
John Pace Jr. b.1787 was the son of
Dear Marian,
I just rechecked the web site and it says:
+3rd wife - Lucy WALKER (3rd wife of Stephen PACE
Edmund PACE
1794 - 1885 Lee Co VA (Betty Pace) or 1804 - 1855 (Jim Pace)
+Frances Elizabeth SMITH
I now remember why I took out the dates I contributed. I think I assumed
that Jim Pace was more accurate than my records and I deleted my dates
and left his.
I guess everyone ought to revise the posting to get it right.
Would you prefer this read EDMOND rather than EDMUND?
Sorry,

Dear Ann,
I am sending you separately a rendering from the Pace research book that
contends our John Pace died at or around the Battle of Shallow Ford,
Surry Co., NC. It is by Bruce Howard.
To answer your questions, no one has ever found a will for John Pace or
his wife Sarah Burge Pace, who died around 1808.
I don't know if the court records on confiscation have been checked. I
didn't know they existed. I have looked at some books on Tories in NC
and have never found my Paces. I did find the name
Good post Betty and Gordon's site is most worthwhile.
Currently I am asking other professional genealogists to review my
research which indicates that George married Mrs. Sarah Maycock widow
of Samuel.

Dear Gordon,
Thanks for your interest.
I can't really argue with you on Noah and Madison Pace possibly being the
sons of Zilpha Pace, but the evidence doesn't persuade me. I suppose
they could have gone to live with their father and Cassandra. I also
can't explain how Alsey Pace could have two living legal wives, since
bigamy got the death penalty back then.
I am using the birth years for the 1850 census for the children of Alsey
Pace and Cassandra--however, this family is remarkable for their

the family of O.A.PACE,along with my mother and

The question is this: my mother was born 1893

Hi Scott,
We've written before but I saved all this, originally Clarinda Pace
BENNETT and Nova Scotia were mentioned. I have a daughter Clarinda Pace
and I'm related to Bennetts of Nova Scotia, the NS Paces also live down
the road in rural Cumberland Co NS but I'm not related to the NS Paces.
This gets too confusing because of the silly coincidences that occur, I
hope you understand, a strange story but there is some new stuff here,
maybe of use to you.
Another coincidence is the Fred Pace and now the D
