LeRoy L. Hammond, 85, of 415 Hyde Ave., Ridgway, died
Saturday following a lengthy illness.
He was born on July 24, 1919 in Austin, son of the
late LeRoy L. and Henrietta (Courtwright) Hammond, Sr.
He married Gretchen L. Easton on September 22, 1946.
She preceded him in death on October 6, 1966.
Mr. Hammond is survived by a son, Walter C. Hammond
and his wife Louise A. of Ridgway; a daughter, Melissa
S. Cunningham and her husband S. A. of Morgantown, W.
Va.; five grandchildren, Jason Roy Hammo

Pauline M. Corato, 95, of the Lutheran Home at Kane,
and formerly of 403 East Street, Johnsonburg, died
February 12 following a lengthy illness at the
Lutheran Home, Kane, where she had been a guest for
five years.
She was born February 6, 1910 in Johnsonburg, daughter
of the late Frank and Julia Germaniro Nicolazzo.
In 1931, she married Gennaro Perri, who preceded her
in death in 1956. In 1957, she married Samuel Corato,
who preceded her in death September 12, 1982.

invited to attend a Memorial Mass to be held in the
St. Boniface Church, Kersey, Saturday, February 26, at
10 a.m. with the Rev. John Kuzilla, pastor,
officiating.
Mr. Micale passed away February 15, 2005.

Clara M. Pura, 91, of Pinecrest Manor, St. Marys, and
formerly of 133 East Avenue, Johnsonburg, died Tuesday
at Pinecrest Manor following a lengthy illness.
She was born October 25, 1913, in Brockway, daughter
of the late Andrew Lovas and Susan M. Rindos Lovas
Sekelsky.
On June 1, 1938, she married Michael P. Pura, who
preceded her in death June 23, 1998.
She is survived by a son, Michael A. Pura and his
wife, Carol, of Johnsonburg; three grandsons, David
Pura and his wife, Julie, of Ridgway,

Clair B. "Buck" Vanderlin, 76, of 227 Grandview Road,
St. Marys, died Saturday at Elk Haven Nursing Home
following an illness of the past several months.
He was born June 12, 1928, in St. Marys, son of the
late Harold and Gertrude Mertz Vanderlin.
He is survived by one sister, Carol Ann (Mrs. Charles)
Eckl of Kersey; three nieces, Paula Newman, Laura
Seder, Ashley Eckl; and four nephews, Steven Eckl,
Rickey Vanderlin, Kyle Seder and Brandon Seder.

James C. Shuey, 50, of Grove Street, Johnsonburg, died
Sunday at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 22, 1954 in Ridgway, son of James R.
and Maxine Pat Sweeney Shuey of Johnsonburg.
In addition to his parents, he is also survived by a
daughter, Joleen Shuey of Johnsonburg; and a sister,
Karen Shuey of St. Marys.
He was predeceased by his grandparents.
Mr. Shuey was a lifelong resident of Johnsonburg and
graduated from Johnsonburg High School, class of 1972.

Roman "Romey" Fledderman, 97, of 1474 Rosely Road, St.
Marys, and formerly of 506 Chestnut Street, died at
the home of Paul J. Valentine, his nephew, Sunday
following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 19, 1907, in St. Marys, son of the
late John B. and Rose Wickett Fledderman.
In July 1927, in Olean, NY, he married Catherine
Herbstritt Fledderman, who preceded him in death
October 9, 1973.
He is survived by a sister, Marcella (Mrs. Thad)
Valentine.

Elmer L. Freeburg, 77, of 285 Granger Ave., died
Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at his residence, following an
extended illness.
He was born Oct. 11, 1927, in Dagus, the son of John
A. and Esther C. Hedlund Freeburg, and moved to the
Youngstown area from Kersey about 60 years ago.
Mr. Freeburg worked for 45 years as a carpenter for A.
R. Johnson Construction in Boardman, retiring in 1992.
He was of the Lutheran faith. He was an avid hunter
and sportsman. He enjoyed deer hunting and loved
country music.

Francis Eugene Boults Sr., 79, of Rasselas Rd.,
Rasselas, died Wednesday night in his home.
Born March 30, 1925 in Johnsonburg, he was the son of
the late Emma (Schenck) Boults and Samuel Boults.
He married Betty Rose (Fiscus) Boults on December 24,
1944 in Holy Cross Rectory in Johnsonburg.
Besides his wife, Mr. Boults is survived by two sons,
Francis E. and Kathy Boults Jr. of Rasselas, and
Arthur A. and Debbie Boults of Kerse; three daughters,
Betty (Mrs. Jim) Zilcoski of Wilcox, Pat (Mrs. P

Anna Regina Cuneo died Saturday, December 18 at Manor
Care Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, MD.
She was born September 29, 1917, daughter of the late
George and Kunigunda (nee Yeager) Cuneo.
Mrs. Cuneo attended Sacred Heart Parochial School and
graduated from Central High School (now Elk County
Catholic High School) in 1934. She worked at Andrew
Kaul Memorial Hospital (now Elk Regional Health
Center). She later worked in the office at Smith
Brothers Store before moving to The Stackpole Carbon
Company, whe

Edith C. Johnson, 93, of 675 Montmorenci Road
(Ridgmont), Ridgway, died Sunday morning at her
residence.
She was born November 10, 1911 in Shawmut, daughter of
the late Carl J. and Ida M. (Peterson) Carlson.
She married Elmer S. Johnson on January 23, 1946. He
preceded her in death October 9, 1978.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by a son, Paul W. Johnson of
New Castle; a brother, Charles R. Carlson of Toby; and
two nieces, Madelyn Guthrie of Madison, Tenn. and
Cynthia Grund-Cumlet of Copenhagen, Denm
I don't know how many of you are Winslow descendents, but there was a very interesting article in the DuBois Courier Express yesterday about the efforts of one Kathy Myers to save the "Winslow House" in Benezette. Apparently, this house was built between 1850 and 1860 by George Wait Winslow, a son of Carpenter Winslow, Jr.
The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy bought the land as elk habitat and was going to tear the house down. To make a long story short, a committee was formed and plans are being made to

Margaret M. "Peg" Bauer, 102, of 213 North Michael
Street, St. Marys, died Monday at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born March 3, 1902, in Arnot, PA, daughter of
the late Michael and Margaret Lambert Cleary. On
September 18, 1926, in St. Patrick's Cathedral,
Elmira, NY, she married Harry E. Bauer Sr., who
preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, Harry E. Bauer and his
wife, Mary, of St. Marys, William M. Bauer and his
wife, Kathleen, of St. Marys; one daughter-in-law,

James Arthur "Art" Wollaston, 96, of Genesee, died
Monday in his home.
Born on March 27, 1908 in Costello, he was the son of
James E. and Kathryn Wollaston.
On October 29, 1936 in Latrobe, he married the former
Hilda M. Hanes, who predeceased him September 16,
2002.
Mr. Wollaston is survived by three son, James W.
Wollaston of Orange, CA, John F. Wollaston of Oxford,
MI, and Robert B. Wollaston of Ankeny, IA; 11
grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and nieces and
nephews.

Johnsonburg, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at his
residence.
He was born January 22, 1940, in Meadville, PA, son of
the late Ralph G. and Edith Britton Samsel.
He is survived by the following aunts and uncles, Sam
Samsel and his wife, Margaret, of Rasselas, Alma (Mrs.
Jerry) Luhr of Johnsonburg; Ruth Samsel of Newton, PA;
and several cousins.

Anna Louise Motts Anthony, 84, of Weedville, died
Tuesday at the DuBois Nursing Home following a brief
illness.
She was born October 5, 1920 in Johnsonburg, daughter
of the late G. Frank and Grace Lesh Eilenberger Motts.
On April 27, 1940, she married Lester S. Anthony, who
survives.
Also surviving is a daughter, Barbara A. (Mrs. Luther)
Nelson Jr. of Weedville; two sisters-in-law, Beulah
Heckman Motts of Stroudsburg, and Laura Miller Anthony

Jack L. Mordan, 78, of 622 South Michael Road, St.
Marys, died unexpectedly Tuesday at Elk Regional
Health Center.
He was born January 4, 1927, in Berwick, PA, son of
the late Horace and Grace Greenly Mordan.
On June 29, 1952, in St. Johns Lutheran Church,
Pottsgrove, PA, he married Ruth Steiner Mordan, who
preceded him in death January 19, 2003.

Leo S. "Butch" Zuchowski Jr., 55, of 42 Dippold
Avenue, and formerly of Daguscahonda, died Tuesday
afternoon at Elk Regional Health Center following a
lengthy illness.
He was born January 11, 1950 in Ridgway, son of Evelyn
Himes Beers of St. Marys and the late Leo Zuchowski.
On July 15, 2000 in St. Marys, he married Patricia
Fodge, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Eugene Lillie of
Morrisville, PA, and Robert Lillie and his wife,

this morning at 10 o'clock for Regis C. Herzing, 89, a
resident of Pinecrest Manor, and formerly of 326
Benedict Street, who died Saturday at the manor
following a lengthy illness.
The Rev. Frank Ziemkiewicz, OSB, was celebrant. Burial
followed in St. Mary's Cemetery.
He was born June 4, 1915 in St. Marys, son of the late
Joseph and Clara Lecker Herzing.
On September 8, 1937 in St. Mary's Church, he married
Alice E. Ehrensberger, who preceded

She was born June 23, 1925 in Benezette, daughter of
