Funny you should ask....
Sherry,
I have just been talking to a geologist who is also a genealogist!
He said that chalk is basically harmless to the tombstone. Some use a chalk
powder that they cover the tombstone with and then brush the surface, leaving
the chalk powder in the depressions & bringing out the letters/numbers.
Another point.
I had asked at one mortuary about how to safely remove the lichen that eats
away at so many tombstones. I was told to get a good brush--the kind that one
would use on
My wife's ancestor Mary LAUMER (1846 - 1930) was (according to some sources)
the first white girl born in St. Mary's, PA. Parent's were Anthony LAUMER
(c.1820- 1881) and Mary ? both probably Bavarian.
At some time the LAUMER family must have relocated to Emporium in Cameron
County, PA. Mary married Thomas VALENTINE there in 1868 and Anthony died
there, run over by a train. Mary might have married Thomas outside of St.
Mary's as he was not Catholic (at least he was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in St.

Dear Ancestor
Dear Ancestor, Your tombstone stands among the rest~ Neglected and
alone.
The name and date are chiseled out~On polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care~ It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist ~ You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you ~ In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats ~Entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled~ One h

Just wondering what everyone on here thinks about chalking a tombstone to
make the information on a weathered stone more readable.
Do you think it is in anyway damaging or disrespectful?
How many of you have used this method?
For those who don't know what I am talking about, "Chalking" a tombstone
means to take a piece of kids sidewalk chalk and rub it sideways on the
stone to bring the carvings out better, so more accurate information can be
obtained from a weathered stone. To my knowledge, chalking a
For those of you with ancestors in Elk County in 1850 and who wish a deeper
picture of their lives--the Elk County Historical Society has a typed
transcript of the 1850 agricultural census. If you are interested in how many
cows your ancestor had or how much butter he produced on his farm, this is the
place to check.

So, who wants to sit with me in the middle of the Ridge Cemetery tonight
at midnight with a Ouija Board?
My husband shot me a dirty look, my step mother wanted to know if I was
nuts, and my dad just laughed............
Lois? Sandy? Surely you aren't scared of your own ancestors?
Oh well......... In that case, Happy Halloween to all the members of the
Elk Co., PA genealogy mailing list!
