Dear Fred,
Had an enjoyable visit to your site. Thanks for the link.
It does not appear that there is a global name-change function in
PAF-4 apart from place names and multimedia. However, I have achieved the
same sort of thing by editting the GEDCOM. I would suggest the following
procedure:
o Backup your data files using the File menu>Backup command
o Export your entire file as a GEDCOM using the File>Export command
(expect you're familiar with that, eh?)

Vikki,
I had been using the PAF 2.31 DOS version for many years and was reluctant to make a change, but a few months ago I had to replace my computer. The new computer has Windows XP home version, and I was forced to make a change. I was successful in converting the old 2.31 data to the newer PAF as follows:
First I made a backup copy (NOT a GEDCOM) of all my 2.31 data files on the old computer. I then downloaded the PAF 4.04.18 program onto my new computer. I purposely used the 4.0 version rather tha
I recently got a new computer. My old computer was running Microsoft
Windows NT 4.00.1381. My new computer runs Microsoft Windows XP
Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 1.
I migrated all of my .paf files from the old machine to the new machine. I
downloaded a new copy of PAF version 4.0.4.18 onto the new machine and
installed it there. Now the file names within PAF are showing up as C:
\VLM_PA~3\OUR_DA~4.PAF. On my old machine the file names showed up as C:
\VLM_PAF_Data\Our_data_20020822W.paf.

I have added Religion as a New Event to an individual: The result was
when printing out the Book it went something like "He joined religion
Presbyterian" (or whatever denomination I typed in). However I do not
care for the word 'joined' and would like it to read say "He was a
Presbyterian" for example. To try and get rid of the word "joined" I
went into the Define Custom Event box and played around with the
sentence usage and verb construct instructions but whatever I do when
the Book is printed the

This last Sunday the instructor in our ward's genealogy class mentioned a book that she had seen in the Deseret Book Store. Yesterday I spent about an hour examining that book. I think it is the best of its' kind that I have ever seen. It gives the recommended ways to enter data. It covers items such as date format, name formats, abbreviations, titles, name suffexes, names of locations, ordinance dates & places, abbreviations, preparing information for TempleReady, etc. It is a How-to-do-it k
It appears that this may be a result of the method you used for
transfer of the files. If you did it with DOS, then indeed, you
have transferred them with the *~4.PAF type name to the new system.
The use of the ~4 and such is used to truncate the names to the
8.3 file name convention of DOS. The 4 would indicate it is the
4th file with this same start in the name. You may just need to
change the names on the new platform. Bill

Hi! there Folks,
I have some surnames as above where I have instances where some are
spelled Irving and others where it is Irvine.
As a result of this I have duplicates where for convenience I wish to
change the generic spelling from Irvine to Irving.
When I have sources to enter they will have the correct spelling as
within the source.
Please advise if there is a way to do this on a 'Global' sort?
Best wishes,
Fred.

Sorry that I don't know the answer to your question, but with this new up to the minute hardware and operating system, why are you using 2-year-old PAF. Many important bug fixes and enhancements have been made between PAF 4.0.4.18 and PAF 5.2
