1. Baptism [1]
Is it possible to change the Event 'Christening' in the main events section to read 'Baptism' instead? I know that Baptism can be added as another event but as I use Baptism to cover both Christening events and Baptisms I would like this to appear in the main events box. I might add that I definitely do not wish to begin a debate about the issue of which term is the correct one to use, this is merely a technical question to find out if it is possible to what I wish to do. Thanks, Margaret North.
2. RE: Unknown names [1]
In general, I will leave unknown names blank, as I don't have a name to fill in. I've seen cases where a persons first name might really be Colonel or Junior and I only fill in something like Unknown if it really is the recorded name in the record - the closest I've seen in Sinenomine - 'without a name' recorded on a baptism. The blank first name with a surname and descendants will print that person as the earliest ancestor on the line - you may be able to add some estimated dates or assumed residences ba
3. Re: [PAF-5] UNKNOWN PATRIARCH [1]
Hi Ron, First of all, I don't submit my family records to the LDS Church, so my database can look however I like. Consequently, I have found that it suits my purpose to create a "Patriarch" record that simply contains the surname (no given name at all). This would be the father of the earliest known ancestor I have. I use this record to contain all the notes that are relavent to this particular line. For instance: Information about the origin of the name; a description about the town that they
4. UNKNOWN PATRIARCH [1]
Hi I am wondering how other PAF users handle their family history when the patriarch/parents of the first generation are known in whole or in part, but neither of the parents is known. In other words, how would you begin your family history printout? Would you create an `unknown' and simply entitle your book or descendants report Family of UNKNOWN or Descendants of UNKNOWN? Would you attempt to title your report Family of JOHN, MARY, HARRY AND JOE SMITH? I'm not even sure PAF would print such a re
5. Re: [PAF-5] Baptism [1]
This certainly is the case in many of the British parish records I have searched. It is not uncommon for the records to be labeled as baptismal records by one parish priest and then when a different priest assumes responsibility for keeping the records, they will be labeled christenings. Even the catalogues and indexes will list them either way. I have always used the Christening fields in the Events section to record either a baptism or a christening when it is not an LDS baptism no matter at wha
6. Re: [PAF-5] UNKNOWN PATRIARCH [1]
Tom, I know that those of us who use genealogy computers are aware of the conventions on use of names. But a lot of my information is given, in the form of Descendancy Charts and Family Group Sheets, to family members and others who are interested in family history and genealogy but are not genealogists. Leaving a given name blank leaves the impression that I got sloppy and forgot to include the name or that I did no research. Or worse yet, think I don't care. The same goes for surnames of women w
7. Re: [PAF-5] RE: Name variation - choice of entry [1]
Gary, I also completely agree with you. When I made my previous statement, I should have qualified it for obvious human error in recording and/or transcription. Jerry
8. Re: [PAF-5] Baptism [1]
Thanks to Richard Halliday, Alan, Mary Lou, Linda and Richard Rands for your helpful responses to my query. I am very inexperienced with PAF5. I am English and not a member of the LDS church so I have no experience of the LDS baptism. Here in England I find that within one parish register both the terms, Christening and Baptism are used, and I decided that I had to use one or the other and chose Baptism to cover all, adult or child/baby. Here I must admit that PAF5 is not my main program as I use Fa
9. RE: [PAF-5] Direct Line Indication [1]
A way to do this is to use the Custom ID. I use the Custom ID for the Ahnentafel number of direct line ancestors. Using the Tools>Preferences>Names option to append the Custom ID to names gives a clear indication of who your direct ancestors are in any "Family View". Of course, it only works for you - not your wife and with only gives one side of the family for your children. To help overcome this, I actual started the Ahnentafel numbering from one of my children so that both my ancestral line and my wif
10. splitting a PAF file [1]
I need a good way to split a PAF file (splitting the husband and wifes file) without losing people. Before I made a GEDCOM of the husbands file and made a new file and then did the same on the wif's half. But I lost 90 people I had to put back in. Anybody have any help Deon in Idaho
11. Re: Name variation - Polish [1]
Hi All, I am a greenie to Family TreeMaker (Sept 2004). In fact, I have only been researching my genealogy since Jan 2004. I have lots of info and want to start right. I find the discussion about recording names very interesting. Polish ancestors defy all rules, I think. I have church records from Poland with names spelled the same since way back. Then they immigrate to the US and all bets are off. My paternal grandfather's baptism name was Jan Chrapowicz. He came to the US using it. He married my g
12. RE: Re: [PAF-5] Name variation - choice of entry [1]
I agree Stewart. I posed the question mostly to open the discussion and to see if there was some "official" recommendation I was not aware of. When I was a 'greenie" I submitted one ancestor using the "or" and I have regretted since not doing more research to clarify the situation before making the submission. No matter what we do there will be duplications, but the choices we make (like submitting to the PRF, etc) can either make it easier or harder for researchers to follow our tracks. Unfortunately a lo
13. Re: [PAF-5] How to Add Siblings/cousins [1]
Thanks for confirming my belief that this is the only way to do it. I use /Jones/ for the father and Mr. in the title line, and /Jones/ with Mrs. in the title line for the mother. Hope springs eternal that I'll find the parents' names someday. 14. Re: UNKNOWN PATRIARCH [1]
Hi there list, I have been following the thread of the emails on the above and find it rather scandalous that in this day and age, we don't come up with something better than Unknown etc., Personally, I put into place the following ie Mr McRITCHIE and MRS McRITCHIE and then type into notes the fact that after a long time of searching for them, I have been unable to find the people concerned. This at least gives me some closure on the PATRIARCHAL lineage.... On some occasions I have the father and
15. RE: [PAF-5] Split screen [1]
Thanks for replying 'on list' I never thought of trying to 'drag & drop' with a split screen - this could of saved me lots of time - I've just tried it and I am delighted. Being able to drag a whole census record or IGI record is great:-)) Thanks again, Val(MURPHY) -----Original Message----- From: Bartretrd@aol.com [mailto:Bartretrd@aol.com] Sent: 06 December 2004 04:21 To: PAF-5-USERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PAF-5] Split screen In a message dated 12/5/2004 9:02:26 PM US Mountain Standard Tim
16. Name variation - choice of entry [1]
My apologies if you have received this before - I sent it some days ago and it has not appeared in my mailbox or in the archives. ---- Dear Listers: I would like to ask your advice on the entry of surnames which have changed over time &/or place. I have done the following consistently - entered the name in the form used by my relatives of that name today. The earlier or variant spelling is always noted as it is spelled on the source document in "NOTES" or "SOURCE...actual text" fields. I also note
17. Direct Line Indication [1]
Hi All Wonder if someone can help with a official or known way of showing the direct line in each "Family" view. I have a family father Francis mother Jane and a number of children, in this view and at this time I know the 3 rd child Jane is the direct line who m. Joshua. Don't find anything in the help file to make it easy to identify the direct line from this family, I wonder that putting and " * " in the "Full Name" field so as to identify quickly the person, the name in another font colour, wo
18. Re: [PAF-5] UNKNOWN PATRIARCH [1]
Boy, this really started a HUBBUB. which I don't think anybody intended. But, for the 2 questions below, as to why I do it; go back and reread my explanation of why I do it. You may totally disagree with my rationale, but it's explained. As to the earlier plea of someone, to give it up, because these people are not unknown, I realize that. They were in fact living, breathing people who were born, married, had families and died. And they are part of my ancestry. I've never implied they were otherw
19. Re: [PAF-5] Baptism [1]
Two or three children in one family were often christened or baptized the same day when the family moved close to a new church, and a step-mother might be listed as the mother. When I first saw paper pedigree forms in 1970, there was limited space for information about each individual. Now a computer genealogy program with built-in wall charts allows multiple dates of birth and baptism and christening with multiple sources of each. It is helpful for individuals who have a different estimated birth yea
20. Re: [PAF-5] Name variation - choice of entry [1]
Hi Jean, There are two issues that you need to keep in mind when dealing with this problem. The primary issue is that you should use the surname that is most likely to tie back to the most relevant source information that documents the individual. If the parish priest listed your ancestor as Robert Feltham in the Parish records, but the census enumerator listed him as Robert Felton, then it is my opinion that you should use the /Feltham or Felton/ structure in the surname field. I would put the Fel
21. First free note error [1]
Just curious. I've run into this error 2 times in the last 3 days with my database. Ex. "20357 records. 20354 is not location of first free note." I've been abstracting a lot of census records from Ancestry and HeritageQuest and toggling back and forth to PAF5 to enter the information. I also deleted several duplicate people rather than matching/merging. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to prevent this error from happening so often? Thanks. Ruth

Yes and No. In the default template of individual information you can not change that top section, HOWEVER.... You can create a New Template for individual records with the information of your choosing. I think the only requirement is full name and gender. Create a new empty database in PAf, then click on an individual, as if you are going to add the data, then see at the bottom of the window "Template: "? Well, use the drop down to the right of "default" and pick Define a New Template. You might t
