I agree with Gary and Lance. Terrific computer! You could probably get by
fine with half
this much computer but you really need to hang with it and learn the
operating system.
You will be glad you did.

Jill, before you return the PC, pay a visit to this HP site. There is
a lot of advice there and links to manuals you can download:
http://tinyurl.com/8h2zy They may be of some assistance.
The HP m7067c model seems to be orientated towards media and may not
be exactly your "cup of tea" (mine neither :-)). I would guess that
the salesman has "upsized" (as they say at McDonald's) your original
request, to a model you could have done without. HP do make less
sophisticated machines so if you have no success wit
You don't want to import a GedCom into your main Database before you check
it to see if you want everything.
You can import it into a Separate New Data Base and edit it first.
I think this is always a careful way to do this.

in order to change the sex the individual must not be linked in a marriage.
you will have to delete all marriages for an individual and then change the
sex and then you can add the marriage back.

LST = List = it's a list of what went wrong during GED-import. Good
idea to at least LOOK at it (always assuming you've checked the boxes to
create it).

Stewart,
I do not understand what you mean by "Incidentally - here is a challenge -
once you know the Ahnentafel number
(from the book report) - by converting it to a binary format can tell you
the exact relationship to the starting individual and provide a trace of
their genealogical relationship as well as any "ladder" formatted report."
How do you convert to a binary format?
Thank you
Jennifer

Hi Bill,
The .pat file is where a Focus/Filter selection is saved.

If you put the word Sex in your subject line it will get picked up by the
Email Scanners as a Sex Email. It would be wise to put something else in or
it doesn't get through.

Generally you should just merge them. You have to different records with
the same info and that is all the RINs mean. You might want to check
folks related to the RINs first and also do a backup in case something
goes wrong (use the Backup on the FILE menu).
If you have read this list for very long, you would have seen previous
discussions about RINs. They are a convenience, but are really just used
by the program go control the number it needs for records. You have no
control over the RINs and they
Hello to the list. I want to print a "ladder" ahnentafel

No. 3 mother, etc.
I don't see how to do this with PAF or with PAF Companion 5.1.
Will Companion 5.2 do it?
Thanks, Dolly in Maryland

Hi Patricia,
This is sort of an ambiguous question because you don't indicate what your
relative plans to do with the Word doc when he or she gets it. The
standard method of handling genealogy data outside of a computer database
is to have a big stack of pedigree charts and family
I endorse Stu's comments about the dangers of managing multiple copies of a
database. While having a network makes what Stu recommends much easier,
his comments are just as viable without a network. It is imperative to
consider one of the copies the Master file, and all others subordinate. I
too have my laptop version designated as the master database because it is
where I do most of my updates. When I travel, it goes with me so I can
update new research. I commute daily and work on it on the tra
Hi Listers
I have just been told about this list.
My problem is that the notes I append for various family members look very boring - no Bold, Underline or Italic to highlight important info.
I've received advice, such as using CTRL/B or cutting and pasting from WordPad, but any success I've had reverts to the same old style when reopened.
Help, please!!!
Kind regards
Joy
Here's more detail on my earlier messages. I went through this with a PAF
file and wrote down the following. This will give you a PDF file or a RTF file of
your PAF Book Report. (I realize that only a few will be interested in this,
but once one gets started trying to figure this all out, it's hard to let go.
A learning experience!)
-Open PAF file, in Family View, and put earliest ancestor in primary
position; be sure his box is highlighted/selected.
-Go to --> File --> PrintReports--> Books -->Modifi
Exporting the whole database and re-importing it is the ONLY way to clear
these errors. On re-import, just make sure you DON'T click REUSE DELETED
NUMBERS otherwise your RIN's will change.
ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP FIRST, JUST IN CASE !!!!!!!

Do I remember correctly was there a problem with SP2 interferring with
PAF-5? Has SP2 been straightened out so that these interference problems
anywhere no longer happen? I have never downloaded it, but I've been
advised that I should by a non-genealogical person.

Hello, all PAF experts!!
I have tried to produce a family group sheet (it happened, when I first
started using this program) but all I get, now, is that really weird-looking
'.rtf' version, even when I print it off.
I have no way to use the 'so strange' .rtf version, on several sheets of
paper, when all I want is one sheet, or at the most, two.
Please, kindly advise this old fat dummy!!

Using multiple copies of a database is fraught with danger. I speak from
experience as I have juggled laptops and multiple desktops. Even if you
have synchronization software, you can get yourself caught making changes
or additions to both and end up with a mess. This is more true of databases
where the changes are made immediately. Windows used to have the briefcase
for keeping multiple databases, but it was cumbersome and one of the first
things I removed.
I use a single database (.paf file) across

Hello group,
I have wedding and family group pictures of both young and adult children that I would like to add. Can someone please tell me where they attach these - to the husband for wedding pictures and to the male parent for family groups or is there a better way? Can they be attached to a family?
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you.

Hi Ruth,
I haven't seen any response to your query, so I'll offer some thoughts.
Your question is a bit confusing because you indicate your want to download
the latest PAF to your PC, laptop, and a flash drive, but you don't specify
if you mean the program or the database. If you plan to install PAF 5 onto
a flash drive, you should do it before you install PAF onto your laptop,
because the PAF install program will not allow you to install on a flash
drive if you have already installed it on the host
