Hi Shirley:
It is well known that Maryland's State Forests and Parks are home to a rich
variety of cultural and historical resources. But did you know that one of
the areas managed by the Department of Natural Resources was actually the
site of a Civil War battle? Gathland State Park, nestled in the first ridge
of the Appalachians just west of historic Frederick, was the scene of a
little known yet quite noteworthy conflict, the Battle of South Mountain.
It might also be in the Appalachians near Frederick

Just a post note to the information about Franklin County. From L. Daniel
Rupp in "History and Topography of Dauphin, Cumberland, Franklin, Bedford,
Adams and Perry Counties" (Gilbert Hills, Lancaster, PA 1846). "After the
defeat of Braddock, many of the settlers of what is now Franklin County
fled to York County PA and on to Maryland...." In other words, if you are
searching for an early Franklin settler and they seem to disappear, check
further east! Most of the families came back to their old homes,

Regarding Carolyn's post below, last Spring I ordered this book from our
local FHC. After a six week wait, I was told that this source does not
circulate. Since I was unable to view it, does anyone know if there is
biographical information about residents of Cumberland and Franklin counties,
or is it primarily "historical and topographic"?
Thanks for any insight.

Greetings to all,
Can anyone with access to the cemetery records of Franklin County look up the surname COFFMAN? I am particularly looking for Christian, Frederick, George, Jacob and David Coffman but any other names would be great. They lived in Washington and Montgomery Townships, Franklin County.
Christian died around 1822 and his wife, Elizabeth (maiden name could have been CHAPMAN), died after 1830. I am not sure when the others died but it was in early to mid 19th century.
Many thanks,
Hyacinth

According to L. Daniel Rupp as stated in The History and Topography of ...
Franklin Co..., published in 1846, "the Conococheague towns were infested
during the revolution with a band of desperate marauders and counterfeiters,
who defied all laws. They had an organized line from Bucks county through
Chester and the Cumberland Valley, into Virginia.."
There was a brisk trade, stealing horses and cattle and turning them over to
the British. After the revolution they stole horses in the north, and sold

Hi...
I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me out in some way. Hattie Mae
Bivens was born May 24, 1879 in Franklin Co.,PA. She was adopted by David
and Sarah (Heigley) at some point in her life. I believe as a new born???
David and Sarah had a daughter, Mary S. Heigley, b. 1860 d. 1861 buried in
the Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Mechanicsburg. I believe that David and Sarah
lived in Mechanicsburg. I believe that Sarah is buried in the Chestnut Hill
Cemetery also, but I am unable to find David
MaryBeth has been posting websites for the marriages from the PA Archives 'before 1790.' Here is another great site for early PA marriages. While filed under Lancaster County, Rev. John Casper Stoever was an itinerant minister who traveled widely in PA. Remember also that he was German, so when searching for nonGerman ancestors you need to be creative with the spelling. eg Montgomery is "Mt. Gommery"
