I was wondering if there is anyone on this list that
is willing to go out to a Scranton cemetery to check
on something? I realize this is a sizable request but
I'm stuck on one particular branch and can't seem to
find anything except some indication that there is
someone in the St. Mary's of the Assumption Church
cemetery on Stafford Ave. in Scranton. In looking at
the cemetery web page

Hello List.. looking for any info on Katherine Kilker who married John M
Callahan or Callaghan .. they may have lived in Kingston in the late
1880's early 1900... john m is shown as an 11 yr old in the 1880
kingston census and then I can not find him again.. but know from
another source that he married a Kilker, Katherine.
In a recently-located obit (1917) is the following mention of a part of
Scranton I do not know about: "Born in Ballina, County Sligo, Ireland, he
came to this country with his parents when he was nine years old, the family
settling soon after in the Sand Banks section."
That would be about 1848.
Or, Sandy Banks? Which might have been a variation.
Any info would be interesting to me.
Thanks,
Anne
Hello Jim
There is only one SPANIS listed in the 1900 PA census, a Katie SPANIS, 19
years old from Austria, living in Philly, a servant, and came to the US in
1897. I do have some PA directories, I will look in for you.

Joe,
The name that I am searching for is Joseph Tremmel b. 5 Nov 1869 Austria d.
10 Nov 1948 Scranton, PA. His wife was Mary Cheslock b. 8 Aug 1874 Bohemia
d. 30 Oct 1913 Scranton, PA. According to the 1920 Census Joseph Tremmel
immigrated to the U.S. in 1893 and was naturalized in 1904. From what I
understand they lived in Scranton all his children were born in Scranton and
so were all his grandchildren.

Can anyone tell me if this church still exists in Scranton.
My great grandparents were married there and I am hoping to
find my grandfather's baptismal records, as well as his
siblings. I have checked Family Search but don't see this
church listed. Of course, it is possible that this
particular church changed names between 1898 and now.
Any help and insight would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Lenora,
I just went through the 1870 Census for the South Side of Scranton and I know I saw a Geiger or two in there. Would yours have been around that long ago?
If so I'll go back and check my database. The census pages are downloaded but I haven't done an index of them yet.

I recently had the same name appear in an obituary that I had. Not having a clue where it was, I asked my good friend Norma Reese at Forest Hill. She did not know either, but a short time later came across the same name. It is the old Pine Brook Cemetery, in the Pine Brook Section of Scranton.
For those of you not familiar, Pine Brook is the area below Wyoming Ave. going away from downtown toward Green Ridge. It extends down to the river. It is Wards 7 and part of 13.

Try writing or calling United Churches of Lackawanna Co. They should be listed in phone to book (Web yellow pages under church organizations-Scranton) to find out what happened to it. The dame heading might lead to Episcopal hierarchy, also.
Could have been like Westminster Presby and another church (name escapes me at the moment) merged, the other congregation moved into the Westminster building and became Covenant Church.
Good luck,
Janet

Could somebody please tell me if subject exists in microfilm form? If so, do
you have ordering info, that is, who has it? I'm not having any luck with my
searches of FHC, NARA, and PA library, but I may be missing something in my
efforts.
Any help would be appreciated.

Any and all help is welcome.

Hi,
I hope someone out there can help me. I started to look on
Ancestry census rolls for the 1860 census for Archbald, PA but I
don't know which township it belonged to. I know it was in
Lucerne county at the time but there is no Archbald Twp listed.
Can anyone tell me which township would contain the records for
Archbald.
Thanks,
Rosemary

I just discovered that my g-grandmother Christiana Jones came through Ellis
Island in Sep 1907 on her way to visit her brother, William Graham, in
Scranton. Apparently her own family (w/ husband Thomas Jones)lived in
Hazleton, PA between 1880 and 1885. The family then returned to NE England.
They were all miners. Does anyone have any information on this family?
