1. Re: [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS] Exeter Working Papers in British Book TradeHistory [1]
If anyone is interested in any Surrey mills on the Wandle I can recommend the Wandle Industrial Museum which has an excellent card index on each mill, who owned it and when etc. Trades included papermaking, calico printing, corn and others. 2. Re: [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS] Exeter Working Papers in British Book TradeHistory [1]
Hi Arlene, I am sure we have corresponded before about this line. Yes there is a connection, with the PIMs moving up & settling in Bramshott. My ancestor John Elstone married into the Pim family and inherited the paper mill. I am not sure of the paper mill connection from Devon to Sussex, but there are PIM papermakers in both counties at the same time, so I believe it is likely, there are also the occurances of the names of Elstone & Warren locally involved with the paper business and I want to spend so

Julie- Have you found any connection between your PIM's in Devon and Hampshire to the PIM's in Lindfield, Sussex who were also paper makers and millers! 4. [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS] Exeter Working Papers in British Book Trade History [1]
A link to this site was posted on another mailing list. Although the link was specifically interested in Surrey www.bookhistory.blogspot.com/2005/12/surrey.html A look at the whole site http://bookhistory.blogspot.com/2005/12/index.html proved to be informative and very fascinating. There is quite a lot of useful bits about Devon paper makers, which is lovely as I am trying to see if there is a connection between the Pim, Elstone & Warren families of Devon & Hampshire. -- Regards, Julie Goucher angle
5. Re: [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS] John McDonnell and Co Ltd, Swift Brook [1]
Hi I'm not a paper making expert and my interest is strictly related to the Lindley name in Yorkshire and Lancashire. (My 4 x great grandfather was a paper maker in the Leeds and Otley areas, late 1700s and early 1800s). However, my copy of Alfred Shorter's 'Paper Making in the British Isles' (1971) gives McDonnell as a (or the) major paper making family in the Dublin area between about 1750 and 1850. He lists the following mills/locations as linked with them: Killeen, Saggart (two mills), Old Bawn (

Dear John that is brilliant and such a swift and helpful response which we have relayed to our questioner. Thanks so much for this information it is greatly appreciated. 7. Re: [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS] John McDonnell and Co Ltd, Swift Brook [1]
We have been asked if we can find out any information about this paper maker John McDonnell and Co. Ltd., Swift Brook. We do not know the date, but it also had the watermark of 'Britannia' with a shield within an ellipse, but we have seen this on a LOT of our old letters, and have never see one with McDonnell. Any help would be appreciated... Eunice and Ron Shanahan in Queensland, Australia
8. [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS ] List Owner Message [1]
Hi All, This is a quick welcome to the new people who have joined the list and a reminder to those already on it. There are few rules on the list, but the one that I do have is that we respond to others, either via the list or directly to the list member, in the manner in which we would all like to be treated, politely, and without insult. We all have delete keys and I would rather we use those than upset or insult each other. Please remember, using email does not allow us to see a smile or gesture, so p
9. RE: [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS ] watermarks 1725-1787 [1]
Eunice, The watermark is from the L V Gerrevink paper mill and seems to be quite common. I would assume it is a British company but am not sure, as my interest is primarily US. I head read numerous times that, due to the demand for paper usually exceeding the production, especially here in the states, most paper was used within 3 years of its manufacture. Paper was no doubt more available in Great Britain so I do not know if this rule would hold as true in Europe. There is a wonderful reference book,
10. RE: [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS ] watermarks 1725-1787 [1]
Dear Craig Many thanks for that prompt and helpful reply - I put a query on the search engine for L V Gerrevink, and it came up on the Thos Gravell site, but not in any detail, but it gave me the full names of Gerrevink - "the Dutch papermill, Lubbertus Van Gerrevink." so I may be able to track it down now from this end. If I find any more information, would you be interested - should I post it back to the list? Eunice in Queensland At 11:50 28/05/00 -0400, you wrote: >Eunice, > The watermark is fro
11. Re: [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS ] Springfield Mill Papers [1]
I have had a brief look at Paper Making in the British Isles, A Historical & Geographical Study by Alfred H Shorter, published 1952. It mentions that Springfield was owned by William Balston and in 1860 the mill employed 350 persons. The Papers are possibly in the County Records Office. You could also try the Archaelogical Society. There is also a Paper Makers Index and it may well be worth writing to the lady who runs this. If you need the address let me know. I have mislaid the address ( I always loos

My SHEPARD ancestors worked for the B.F. Lyons papermill co. circa 1850's to 1910's. They built and managed paper mills. Is there any place I can find information on the B.F. Lyons paper mill co.? 13. [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS ] Bowater Scott [1]
Would it be possible to find archive records of an accident which I believe took place in 1927 at Bowater Scott, Northfleet, Kent, where my grandfather was killed. His eldest son (and two brothers) also worked at the same mill and he apparently emigrated with them to South Africa, would it be possible to find out if this were true as well. Thank you in advance. New member - query I am trying to determine the year a letter was written, and the only four clues I have are the two postal marks (which limit it to between 1721 and 1787 ); the addressee, in Park Street, and the mention of Alex Dingwall, Upholsterer possibly near Leadenhall, - and the watermark on the paper which unfortunately does not include a year (some of them do) This watermark on the paper is a crown over a kind of shield with a hunting horn in the middle and the letters L V G
17. [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS ] Springfield Mill Papers [1]
I'm a relative newcomer to this list, so apologies if this question has been answered before.... Shorter, in his Paper Making in England 1495-1800 makes frequent references to a source as "Papers from Springfield Mill, Kent" - can any one tell me more about this source? Where is it now, and is it accessible to the general public? I'm particularly interested in early references to the VENABLES paper makers in and around the S Bucks/Berks Mills Harvey
