1. RE: [PAPHILA] John Moore/Charles Moore - Philadelphia [1]
Karen, I did a little further checking to see what I could come up. First let me tell you that brother John is not living with Charles in 1910. The census index shows a 17 yo brother John, but i don't see him in the actual record. I think the index is wrong. You will find the family in the 13th Ward, ED 180 Visit 106. The addresss is in the 505 N 7th Street. Charles is a coroker having been born in PA with both parents in Germany. His wife was born in MA. Their two oldest children, John and

Hi Mary, I worded the request incorrectly. It was the 29th ward I found him in the 1900 Census at 1541 Opal Street. Just curious to the section of the city. Thanks everyone for the response. Stacey Hi Stacey, There is both N. and S. Opal Street. You really must know which one you want. 1541 N. Opal Street is located in Ward 47. The boundaries of that ward: Poplar, Broad, 23rd St. and Montgomery Ave. It is North Philadelphia and I suppose the neighborhood has a name. Perhaps someone can tell us.

I would absolutely love to find out more about the records available at the Northern Home. I found my great-great grandfather in the 1880 census there. His father, Charles H. Townsend, had died in Andersonville Prison. Apparently Charles lived at home with his mother for a few years and then entered into the system, first going to a Children's Home in Chester Springs and then moving to the Northern Home. He wasn't orphaned as his mother and sister remained in the area for decades, though so I thought th

The info you got re the marriage licenses is correct. Outrageous, but correct. If you order in person, it is only $15 and they mail you the licenses. Still a ripoff, but better You do know that this system should only be used for marriages after 1915. Before that you can get them from a microfilm from the Family History LIbrary. Merle

If you visit the Betsy Ross House on Arch St., you will see her grave. Assuming that they moved the correct remains. Some years ago, there was an article in the Inquirer on the dispute as to the identity of the remains. The next time that I go downtown, I shall take a photograph of the site on Arch St. I shall post the photo as an attachment on the allaboutphilly@yahoo.com group.
