1. Re: [WASH] Nicknames [1]
Someone mentioned Lydia... I have several women ancestors who had this as a given name I believe. I don't think it was a nickname but I'm open to possibilities. Judy
2. [WASH] Early nicknames [1]
This is just what I was looking for in my favorites but could not find it. I have marked it now. My grandmother's name was Mary Eliza, nickname Lida or Lyda. Did not find that one. I figure she was trying to say Eliza - the name she was called on the 1870 census - and could not, so ended up as Lida. My grandfather's second wife was Etta. I did a quick search on that and found several choices. I plan to write for their marriage application to get her real name. She was his second wife, not related to me by
3. RE: [WASH] Oak Spring Cemetery [1]
Ellen, No problem, you can nib all you what, that's what these lists are all about. Sharing ideas and learning and I'm still learning all this. I had called the cemetery but couldn't get any information that varified a section to look in. The cemetery said something about there being another Hughes (man) buried with another woman (another first name) and it said "Wife" , so I figured it wasn't the same one. The funeral home seems like it might work but I've had trouble before with funeral homes and g

Is there a index for St Patrick's Cemetery in Canonsburg anywhere? I am searching for Catherine Russell Hutchison Burns and John "Jack" Burns death dates I found out tonight that they are buried in St Patrick's along with their daughter Catherine Georgetta Burns Sedora and her husband, but I have no dates. Any help would be appreciated. Terry Hutchison Cook
5. Re: [WASH] "Fun" with nicknames [1]
Speaking of mis names i don't refer to them as nicknames anymore. I was fortunate enough to find my ggrandfathers original batismal certificate along with several of his siblings and not one of them used their given name. My grandfather who was always know as Bert was Joseph Buchner, his sister Known as Marie was really Mary Elizabeth, John was called Leroy, and Jane was Jean. And their "nicknames" were what was recorded on their death certificates. It wasn't until i turned up their batismal records d

Gina Wrote: I have catalogued Oak Spring Cemetery (the old sections). The new sections are in the Oak Spring Cemetery Database at their office. There are about 25,0000 burials there. Gina, Have a question for you.. Sent for my gr-aunt's death certificate and it says she was buried in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg. She died in Lawrence County. Her name was Emma Dennis Hughes. I don't know what her husband's first name was either and it's not listed on the death certificate. My husband an

8. [WASH] BARTLETT [1]
I have held back from posting any interest on the list because I hold out little hope for them. But thought I would mention that I am interested in any early BARTLETTS. I have a Thomas BARTLETT in Fayette County. He is "said to be" the Thomas Bartlett from Washington County who signed the petition for the new state ca. 1780's. This is the only time this name shows up in this time period and place. By 1790 the brothers Thomas & Isaac are in Fayette County. The age for my Thomas is uncertain. He wa

12. [WASH] "Here we go again" [1]
So much as been written on this site about the color of your skin, whether you are English, German, French, Irish or when your ancestors came to this country. Does it really make a difference? It's not who you are but what you are. It's how you treat others. We can't live in the past and only can live each day to the fullest and thank God for all of our ancestors and friends. Some of my ancestors came from Switzerland and settled Berks Co., Pa. They were indentured servants owing to William Penn

What you say about this is so true, but notice that it's just Feb. of the year & the reason this seems to happen is because the stone cutter it still thinking it's last year, just like we do on writing dates on letters in Jan. 15. [WASH] correction and update [1]
I have a couple of things to let you all know. First of all I goofed up. I announced a new page for Ancestors photos and then changed the address of the page. What I actually did was change it from an .htm ending to .html to keep it in line with the rest of the website. http://www.pa-roots.com/~washington/photos/index.html Also, I have expanded the number of marriages by Rev. Charles Wheeler (Baptist). We did have them from 1825-1829. Now they have been redone and they go from 1815-1839. This is a p

17. Re: [WASH] Civil War- Colored Troops [1]
The views towards blacks mostlly was that they were mere possessions, and in some minds were valued far LESS than their cattle and horses. I'm not surprised that the Confederate Soldiers looked upon the burial of a white soldier with black soldiers as a "punishment" back then. Even through WWI, blacks were disregarded and their skills and heroism were ignored while they were belittled/ignored. As I go through the census I always wonder about all the people's lives. And even more when I see the "M
