Mary--have you posted your query on any specific mailing list? I would consider the Saskatchewan list for two reasons--first that so many folks passed through saskatchewan who were russian/german/ukrainian and second because there are some real experts at immigration to North Dakota who are on that list.

I am happy to hear that my grandmother (Trix Piatt Koch) was not alone
in what I had always thought was an unusual decision when she gave my
father her maiden surname as his given name (Piatt Koch). He also gave
me the name of Piatt as my middle name (Don Piatt Koch)(That is how it
appears on my birth certificate). The nuns at St. Agatha's felt that
Don was a nickname and insisted that I was Donald which is essentially
how I am known today. I continued my father's practice with my son

I got to the site without difficulty by copying the site's address as quoted
by Laverne in her e-mail, then pasting it into the spot at the top of the

Maybe they were really Piatts but called themselves, or were called, Piazza
to fit into the Italian culture of the area? Or maybe . . .
Who knows?

Hi Liz,
Before you try to figure out if this Benjamin Pyatt in the Packer material
may be the same Benjamin Piatt married to Hannah Bowlby, let me inform you
that these are two different persons and not one and the same person. I am
well aware of Warren Packer's material and have a full copy of it for many
years. Just hoping to assist you
so you don't waste a lot of your time in trying to figure it out.

I just have to jump in this discussion. My g.g.g.grandfather was Pyatt
Martin b. 1773 in Piscataway, NJ. His Father was Jacob Martin and Jacob's
mother was Dinah Pyatt. So, Pyatt Martin as a given name has been used for a
couple of centuries at least.
I know Laverne is familiar with his name and we have discussed this in
the past (via email!)
Marion Keefer, Oregon
For Marion and Don,
Pyatt Martin and Piatt Williamson are the two earliest uses of Piatt as a given
name that I can think of. (And my subject line should have said "given" name--
too many thoughtless mistakes lately.) I believe it is Pyatt Martin who is
buried in Marion Co OH, in the first row next to the road.
I was really surprised to find these other Piatt/Pyatt given names and that
several of them were female.
I would say that Piatt/Pyatt as a given name or middle name as Don Piatt Koch
