Because the Piatt Surname DNA study is underway I think it's appropriate to
mention that the current issue of Time Magazine (dated 17 February 2003) contains
a special section of almost 20 pages devoted to DNA. The special report is in
honor of the 50th Anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA (not of
DNA itself). It's such a great report I will forgive them for telling me I'm
only 6 degrees away from bakers' yeast.
What a great last minute Valentine's Day gift for your favorite geneal
Mary Smith is thought to have been the second wife of William Peatt, so it might
be possible that Mary Elizabeth Jane Peyatt who married John C Ward was from the
first marriage to a woman whose identity is still unknown. The article in the
WEST VIRGINIA HERITAGE ENCYCLOPEDIA, Vol 22, pp 4848-4851, states that Mary
Peyatt Ward's parents came from New Jersey.

The people mentioned in recent E-mail exchanges among Dee Mitchell, Laverne

three sons (including the sought-after "Uncle Sim"--Simeon Augustus Piatt),
and the famous Aunt Daisy Piatt Warner. In fact, page 11, of the 45 pages,
has two extra photos of Aunt Daisy. All these photos were submitted by Dee

I have been busy abstracting all of the 1880 Piatt/Pyeatt/etc. for my website records (http://www.angelfire.com/ar/pyeatt/1880cen.html) and have accomplished that feat by state through Pennsylvania (the end is in site!). I noticed a Christopher Piatt that I am interested in learning more about. His family and one other Piatt family were in Danby, Tompkins County, New York, however he was originally from New Jersey. Can anyone shed light on this Christopher's descendants and where they lived? Thanks, Mar

We decided that as participants in the Piatt DNA study that my six year old would provide the specimens. I also thought it would be a neat 'Show and Tell' for him for school tomorrow - so - we took pictures. I went by a local one-hour photo and asked the owner (we discuss genealogy a lot as he restores my old photos) if he would mind printing out the last three photos on white paper for me so that Beau could use it for Show and Tell. I told the girl writing down the instructions that he was in white pajam

Just came back from a week in Columbia County searching for Piatt's. (Got
back before the big snow storm!)
Like most states, PA subdivides all of its area into counties. It then
further subdivides each county into area townships. Boroughs and villages
are part of the townships. In 1820, Columbia County lists only one Piatt -
located only in the Borough of Jackson, in Madison Township in Columbia.
Here are some population figures for 1820 for townships in Columbia County:

I believe that it was at the conference in Fort Wayne that the two of you
mentioned finding Rebecca's grave in a county bordering Richland Co. I was
surprised because I knew of no Piatts ever in that county. In my post I said
Knox County which I believe was a mistake, a result of posting "from memory." I
think you said that a Rebecca Piatt was buried in Morrow County but I can't
remember the cemetery off hand.
At first I thought that this Rebecca might have been the Rebecca w

Good work, Dee, keep digging. If all proves out correctly Mary Elizabeth Pyatt
Ward would be a sister to Benjamin F Piatt, son of William Peatt and first wife.
Aunt Daisy's letter said her grandather Benjamin Piatt left home [(W)VA] because
of his step-mother (Mary Smith Peatt?) and went to IN. Presumably he linked up
with his uncle(s) there or else he was just really lucky to find other Piatts
already in Bartholomew Co IN.

Subject: [PIATT] Piatt Surname DNA study has begun
Several weeks ago I posted a message to the PIATT-L list suggesting the
possibility of conducting a Piatt Surname DNA study and calling for discussion of
same. There was little discussion but a number of Piatt gentlemen decided to go
ahead with the study. Therefore, the Piatt Surname DNA study has begun. I hav
