I have been doing a complete census research for the New England, Middle Atlantic states on this family, presently searching VA and WV.
Spellings found to date - Paeth, Paith, Paitt, Payte, Peat, Peate, Peats, Peatt, Peatte, Peattie, Peayatt, Peaytt, Peeyatt, Peit, Peot, Peott, Peyatt, Peyott, Piat, Piatt, Piatte, Piet,
The name is a bit grandiose as this site seems to be only for veterans and dependants. However, the database contains some 107 names for Piatt; 33 for Pyeatt, 3 for Peyatt, 7 for Pyott and 84 for Pyatt. So it may be a handy link to have in your list of bookmarks or favorites:

Welcome to the list. I hope it will be productive for you.
Concerning your James Francis Piatt and son James Weldon Piatt I looked at the Social Security Death Index which is available free at rootsweb:
http://www.rootsweb.com
The death index lists James Piatt which would be your James Francis Piatt with the same birth and death dates that you give: b 16 Oct 1876 and d 7 Apr 1964. His Social Security card was issued in Virginia and the last residence listed for him was also Virginia.

Laverne,
I have the same thing for Alexander in the censuses. I do not know where
you are researching, but I have taken mine from Ancestry.
Alexander does not appear in Ancestry for 1880, 1900, 1910, 1930.
However, in the 1920 census for Tazewell County, WV there is a Alexander
Pyatt, age 72.
The copy of the census is very light and the ages may not be correct. I do
not know if this is the same Alexander, but he has a wife Bettie, age 48, a

The Benjamin F Piatt should be the son of Andrew Jackson Piatt and Margaret Winters of Jo Piatt Lauer's line. Thanks for posting this marriage to the list.

There is no PIATT (all spellings) under the names of Nathan. Charles, Donald
in the index of Ancestry for 1930 for the whole United States. Sorry.

Laverne,
I spent several hours touring sites last night and did eventually locate the
SSDI database. The fact that you yourself had used it to locate much of my
missing information confirmed to me that it is indeed a very useful site.
I have a couple Business Accounts in the Kinston/Goldsboro area ... so I'm
going to drop in on them in the coming weeks. I'll plan an overnight stay

For Christie,
Yes, there were separate branches of Pyotts/Pyatts in Roane Co TN and WV. Your branch from John Pyott of Loudoun Co VA went to Rhea, Roane, Grainger, and Hamlen Counties in TN at least. Some went on into TX after the Civil War. The WV Pyatts are from William and Mary Smith Peatt of Nicholas Co WV. DNA confirms that the line of William Pyatt is a match to other lines who feel they descend from Rene. We don't have a participant in the DNA study from the VA/TN Pyotts yet so the link, if any

Thanks, Robin. With a second look at Nathan's 1920 neighbors I think the name is Claude E Hawkins. And maybe the tower which controlled the quad crossing in Marion OH was RU Tower rather than AU.

Robin!
Thanks a million! My father confirmed by phone that Mark would have been
about 5 years older then he, and my dad was born in 1946!
1312 Summit Ave; Fayetteville, NC was one of the addresses in my Great
Uncle's Address book ... and Fayetteville, NC is in Cumberland County!
SSDI doesnt have any listing on any combination of Marcus Francis Piatt, so
more then likely he is still living. Does anyone have a database or site
that could aid me in locating a living person?
Thanks!!
Eddie

It's wonderful to see Eddie Piatt closing in on his not to distant, but "lost" cousins and to see all the help given by the Piatt listers.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could use our keen skills just one more time this summer to discover the missing documents that would tie Rene and the next couple of his generations to our earliest known ancestors in the several lines? The 2006 Piatt Researchers' Conference will be held at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown PA on June 18-24. Be sure to mark your calen

********************************
James Francis had a brother (William H. Piatt) that lived in Winston Salem,
NC in 1930.
I know this due to a letter their father (Albert James Piatt, b. /10/1851;d.

In 1989,Volume 4 of the Piatt Family Newsletter published a theoretical family group of William and Mary Smith Peatt of (W)VA listing some 11 children. The two youngest were Alexander, b c 1840 and John S, b 16 June 1842. John S is believed to be the man who married Mary Catherine Snyder. But what became of Alexander Pyatt? Nothing further is given in PFN.
In the 1850 census John Piatt, aged 8, is listed in the household of Margaret Peatt, presumably Mary Smith Peatt, William's widow. Alexander Peatt,

Index shows Joseph Piotte p 240 1799-1800
Can anyone place him in context? My hunch is son of Elijah Piatt and
Rebecca Manning or the Joseph who married Jean Brooks and moved to North

would have already been in North Carolina by this time.
Any ideas?

A while back (like, a year or so) Laverne posted some information on Pyatts
in Roane County. (Ive just quit working so am going over old email and
trying to catch up!)
I have a good hunch that these Pyatts are related to the Jackson County
Pyatts (John S and family) because one of John's Son's died in Roane County.
Francis Leon was born 1915 though so Im not sure where the connection is.
Will update when I have more information. Anyone who has Francis's
children--could you please email me?
Thanks,
