I have a photo of Don Piatt, standing by a 1920s car, with people named Shaw, Curry, Mayfield and others.....and I would like to get the photo back to family members. If you are related to Don Piatt, who was probably the man in Clintonia (Dewitt Co.) IL in the 1930 census, email me

Dear Laverne, Robin, & Piatt List Friends,
James Henry Piatt was an older brother of my Great-Grandfather, Andrew
Jackson Piatt. Their parents were Benjamin Piatt and Sarah Donoho/Donahue, who were
married 20 Nov 1809 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Their other children
were William Piatt, born 1810; Catherine Piatt, born ca. 1812-1814 (married
Elijah Turner); John Peatt/Piatt, (married Margaret Cartmill 10 Dec 1838 in
Lawrence County, OH --- same date and location as James Henry Pratt/Piatt's weddi
This is getting complicated, Robin:

It's probably just coincidental that the Bowlby name is connected to Piatt in New Jersey, I believe at New Hamptom along the Musconetcong River about 1820(?). Check out:

Robin, Most of my family buried in WV are in Mt. Hope and I have never
been able to find their graves ,if John's is not marked that makes sense
but I don't remember ever seeing a Mary either. I am going back in a
month or so, I'll look again. I was just there in March for my
Grandmother's funeral, Verna Rowley Snyder wife of John Snyder relative
of John Pyatt's Mary. Marlene

Hi List.
I just came accross a stroke of luck. Seems my uncle's grand daughter
discovered a few boxes of my grandmother's pictures stode away under the
hallways stairs. When the granddaughter moved out of her Dad's house.
In this box were old pictures taken either in the very late 1800's or early
1900's.
Anyway written in my grand mother's handwritting was her mother's
name....written as PYATT! I had thought it was spelled PIATT.
Her ,mother was Elizbeth Hannah PYATT whose parents were Moses Pyatt and

From the Piatt Family Newsletter, Volume 3, 1988:
Jean Vail contributed information from a book, "Family Tree Book, Genealogical and Biographical," by W Thomas Smith in which Mr Smith discusses the Carolina Piatts. In addition to mentioning Peter Piatt who we think was from the Path Valley of PA, Smith also mentioned Joseph Pyatt born in Warwickshire, England, and John Pyatt of Georgetown. Concerning the last:
"One John Pyatt settled early at Georgetown SC, and his will is dated 1760. He married Hannah
The discussion of Piatt/Pyatt spellings reminds me of something Lynn White and I discovered and found amusing a number of years ago.
Two Benjamin Piatt/Pyatts lived in Bartholomew Co IN at the same time. They were approximately two years apart in age. Likely, they were cousins with Benjamin Piatt being the son of William Peatt and who left his home in VA because he couldn't get along with his step-mother, Mary Smith. Benjamin Piatt married Ann Carter and lived in or near Columbus, the county seat. Benj

The 1850 Cabell Co (W)VA census concerns James Henry Piatt, the most prolific Piatt to date (I think). And, Robin, James chose as his second wife a SMITH! And their daughter married a SMITH! What a surprise! Plus, one of the sons of the second family had Martin as his middle name. The Piatt Family Newsletter Volume 4, 1989 published this family group sheet:

Hi Robin,
I can tell you a bit more on the two William Piatts you mention.
William Piatt, son of Daniel and Catharine (Sherrard) Piatt, was born
3/11/1773 in Pluckemin, NJ and died unmarried 8/16/1834. He basically served his
life as a military man eventually obtaining the rank of Major the same as his
father Daniel.
William A. Piatt was born in 1811 in Boone Co., Ky. and died in 1900. After
he moved to Cumberland, Allegany Co., MD he became mayor on 5/8/1871. He
later became Judge of the Orphan C
Ancestry.com lists a Nathan Piatt born 1790 in Kentucky. Parents listed are
Jacob Piatt and Milly Walker. Anyone heard of this family? Nathan is a
prominent name in my line and the time frame would make Nathan a possible
brother to my William.

So I have established that my John S Pyatt's wife Mary Snyder was a sister
to the wife of John's Brother William Jnr. as follows:
John S and William Jr sons of William and Mary Smith Pyatt
Mary and Lucinda Snyder, daughters of Thomas and Elizabeth Buttler Snyder.
(Roane County, VA 1860 Census)
Both couples were married in Mason County, VA in the mid 1860's.
So Im following this William Junior line to see if I can figure out why they
came to Western WV from Nicholas County.

last I heard. When I was a small child we used to have family reunions on
his farm in Cutler, OH.
I think we are way past due for a big reunion for this side of the family.

Can someone please fill me in on the descendents/marriages of Jacob Piatt,
son of Jacob and Elizabeth Dunham Piatt?
Actually clarification on all of thier children would be helpful since I
have 17 children listed for them with births from 1746 to 1784 with many
duplicate names but non-matching birth dates.
Thanks!

Hi Marlene!
John and Mary are buried at Trace Fork Cemetery (Mount Hope Church of God
Cemetery on Trace Fork, just northeast of Ripley, WV), as are John and Mary
(Truax) Piatt. So far we have found no relationships between the two Johns.
Terry Manning (William,John, William Ross, Edward William, Terry) recently
discovered that the one with the headstone is actually the John Piatt who
married Mary Truax. Its currently not established which Mary he is buried
next to. Our John's grave has no stone and is

These are Piatts of many spellings listed in the 1790, 1800, and 1810
federal censuses. Its not a complete list since some censuses no longer
exist, and because I didn't list any Peet(e), Peat, etc names and there is a
good possibility some of ours are lost in that spelling. Interesting
nonetheless...
