Greetings!
My name is Christine, and I am the list keeper for the PIATT surname mailing list from Rootsweb. Yes, the list is spelled PIATT, but it is designed to encompass any spelling of the name.
Many PIATT, PYOTT, PYEATTE, or PYATT lines can be traced back to the same common ancestor, Rene who migrated from Franc
Robin & all,
Ancestralfindings is an ok site, I didn;t join it but I do belong
to ancestry.com so maybe thats why I can look around.Seems to me it's just
more of a central list of places to search cause when you click on one it
usually takes you somewhere else.Besides that you can get one free lookup a
day at different places and they are pretty fast about getting back to you.

You say that John Piatt (b:c1784) was murdered in New Orleans, LA before 26
Jun 1812. Do you know the story behind that?
Why was John in New Orleans? Was he the only Piatt down there?
I have come across the following.
A Benjamin Piatt that was always in trouble with the law down in Louisiana.
Now, he is supposedly the son of Jacob Pyatt and Elizabeth Dunham. He married
a Mary Phillips, was divorced. He apparently married for second to a Mary
Waddell and settled in Adams County, OH.
Now, my question
Greetings list!
I just heard a spot on the radio for today's Fresh Air with Terry
Gross--she is going to interview Peter Piot. I don't remember exactly
what his title is, but I believe he works for the United Nations in the
interests of AIDS research or prevention.
http://freshair.npr.org/ They will have more information about it
tomorrow, when the archive of the show will be available online.
Not exactly genealogy, but boy do my ears perk up when I hear a Piot!
Thanks, and good luck,

As far as I can tell, this site is part of Ancestry.com which has been worth
the money which I've spent (census image membership). MCP

Hey Christine - thanks for the info on the NPRFresh Air interview . I
accidently heard the Terri Gross interview with Dr. Piot. Very interesting.
If we're related to him, we have a lot to be proud of. He's been doing AIDS
research from the beginning and it sounds as though he was the first to
really discover the AIDS virus, name it, research it, and work with patients.
James J And Ellen (Barney) Piatt Lowdan/Loudad
How old was Ellen Barney? If our Ellen is the one in the 1850 census she would have
been 4 or 5 years younger then James, and would have been the right age the attract a
young James. If James was 20 and Ellen 16 when married then the time would have right
in 1870 to have son George 13 (although I have his date as 10/22/1854) A year here are
there may be expanded by the date the census was taken.
But this data raises as many question as it gives answers. El

Okay, you archive (the technical kind) experts. Where do I go to see a
chronological list of the emails from the PIATT-L list?
I normally save all emails that include anything that I need to save to add
to my website/database. But, I can't keep up and my mailbox is getting too
full. So, if I could go back to the rootsweb archive to retrieve that
information, I could delete the emails from my box. Thanks, Marianne

I am trying to tie out the source records that I have for him and his

For Dave Piatt and all other interested parties -
In checking my files on the above family, I find the following.
I have a question mark with Ellen's date of birth, 1830 and 1838. I never
saw the death certificate, but if the numbers are clear, it would seem that
was correct.
However, I have found many discrepancies in census records with ages, so
either they would give it wrong or the censustaker did not hear it correctly.
Regarding, daughter Sarah P. Piatt. Her correct name was Sarah Mildred and

Can anyone help me with Solomon Piatt. He was 38 years old when he mustered
in on 7 October 1861 in an Ohio Regiment. I am trying to find out who his
parents are and how he connects to the Rene Piatt line.
Marlene and Listers--
Your Anna Louisianna Pyatt was sister to my Edward William (sometimes seen
as William Edward) Pyatt born 16 Feb 1863. Parents were John S Pyatt and
Mary C Snider.
Im VERY interested in corresponding with you regarding this family,
especially if you have information on John's parentage. I believe there
are a couple of other researchers from this line on the list as well.
Terry? Randy? You guys still around?
Have additional information on the family on my website at:

his cousin Catherine Canby (1828-1888) d/o of Robert of Daniel of John of

For David Eckert:
Jacob Pyatt Sr and Jacob Pyatt Jr, believed to be father and son, but not
necessarily proved to be such, were among those listed as having been
disposessed of their lands west of Tuscarora Mountain in PA and having their
cabins burned by the PA militia. Settlers had violated the treaty boundaries
in several valleys west of the Susquehanna in the 1750s. The Indians, rather
than taking matters into their own hands, made a request of PA Colonial
Governor Hamilton that he solve the problem

Yes, I THINK the Dearborn Co IN Benjamin is the same who was a Federal judge
in Cincinnati. Dearborn Co IN is just a ferry ride from Boone Co KY where
Benjamin's father Jacob had built Federal Hall, his own fine home.
I have not checked out the fact that this Benjamin spent time in Dearborn Co
IN as yet. This is just speculation.
But the Benjamin who was a Federal judge in Cincinnati is the same as the one
who had a wonderful 11 room log summer home in Logan Co OH. (Forget this

Has anyone heard the story of Burnt Cabins, PA? Supposedly, a group of
settlers settled this area of PA illegally because it was Indian land. In
1750, the government came in and forced them out. Before leaving, they burnt
their Cabins to the ground so the Indians could not use them and thus the
town received its name, Burnt Cabins, PA. There was a Piatt family involved
in this and I am trying to find out which one. Do you perhaps know or know of
anyone that would?
