Look to Walter's ancestry, rather than his wife's, for the answer to this
question. Walter Fitz Alan's paternal grandfather, Flaald, was hereditary
steward of the archbishops of Dol in Brittany; thus, his family origins were
well-established in the Celtic nobility [1]. Flaald the Breton was among a
group of Breton warriors who had given aid to King Henry I of England in his
battles with his brothers, William II (Rufus) and Robert, Duke of Normandy.
Flaald's reward was a grant of land on the Welsh ma

Kevin and Jim,
Thanks a million for answering my questions concerning Walter fitz Alan!!!
Both of you answered my question plus other questions that I had but didn't
ask! It was like you two were reading my mind! I'm just begining to verify a
possible connection (through my mother's line) to Walter's brother William
when these questions came to mind. Thanks again for your help!!!

Well, I might be able to help answer this. As you are aware, in addition
to my direct lineage I have also included siblings and their families in
my database. I ran a query and, among the thousands of descendants it
returned I did find instances of the two families (Stewart and

of the crown (I find descents from at least six of these), yet his one

Hello!
Can anyone explain how it came about that Walter FitzAlan (b. abt. 1106 -
1177, son of Alan FitzFlaad and Avelina De Hesdin) was granted the
hereditary office of High Steward of Scotland? His line eventually produced
the Stewart line of Scottish Kings.
Avelina De Hesdin's parents were Arnulph/Arnulf/Ernulf De Hesdin and
Emmelina who had sons Arnulph/Arnulf/Ernulf, William, and possibly Walter
and Hugh.
Arnulph/Arnulf/Ernulf De Hesdin (the senior) was implicated in the northern
rising of Robert de

Richard,
You're welcome. I have links to both Walter and William; the latter was an
ancestor of Margaret Holand, wife of John Beaufort--making William an
ancestor of the Lancastrian branch of the later Plantagenet dynasty. In my
particular lineage, Walter was the forebear of the Lovels, the Botreauxs,
and the Champernouns but there's no Plantagenet connection in that grouping.
Since my interest is principally in tracking my direct lineages only,
perhaps someone here can enlighten the list as to whe
