I don't mean this in a derogatory sense but Christian Poles must face up to the fact that the Jews own the Holocaust. You are not going to get very far with anything that may diminish the Jewish tragedy and certainly that may put Jews in an unfavorable light. Johnna, Please accept my condolences. It is important that you flatten the papers you received and place them in acid-free (archival; most are now) plastic sleeves to protect them. Don't leave them out. Put them in a binder away from sunlight. These are wonderful documents to have. Michelle, Dobino, in old woj. Pil~a, is a parish so there are probably church records. LDS has not filmed any from this parish so, depending on the years involved and the religion, you would probably have to write a letter (in Polish) to the church itself. The background of the story is this... My family has located the grave of my grandmother's baby brother, who died at the age of 2. He is buried in an older section of a largely Polish cemetery in Linden, NJ. Although we do not have the deed to the grave, the cemetery keeper has been more than accomodating in allowing us to order and have a marker put on Jozef's grave. For those living in the New England/New York area, The Polish National Catholic Church, Eastern Diocese will hold a Vesper Service at the Cathedral of the Pines on 7/13, at 3 pm. Bishop Thomas Gnat will be the Celebrant with Rev. Joseph Soltysiak assisting. The Cathedral is located in Rindge NH (off Route 101) and is an absolutely gorgeous place to meditate, pray, contemplate, etc. Other than having been there a few times, I hold no interest in the Cathedral nor the PNCC... Lynda, Because people use different email programs it's impossible to know if the email you send using diacritical marks will be received so that it can be read. If you are writing to a Polish person and just use the Latin letters without the diacritical marks, they will probably understand the email. That's what I do. The database only lists those records which have been accessed by somebody in recent years i.e. don't assume that all immigrants to Australia will be on the database. This seems akin to other Polish names, including my family's which went from Bieqkowski to Benkowski to Benkoski. I think it had to do with the pronunciation and the way it was heard. It sounded much like Benkofski/Benkovski or Benkufski/Benkuvski (and some people have retained those spellings). In general, I think that it just became easier for our ancestors to "go with the flow" and spell their names the way non-Poles tended to spell them from how they heard them.
