When I was growing up in NE PA, this name was pronounced "bow ga SHES
ski"
with "SHES" sounding like "yes".
Kind
It's close with the yes but there's a tendancy to eliminate the W sound
which is pronounced like a V.

You are lucky, + Boguszewski ; doesn't have any diacritical mark !

In AngloPolish, not in Polish !

Glad you have some "new" names and ways to research. I have a joke -
maybe nobody else will think it's funny. After trying on my own to
learn some Polish, I decided that Polish is the only language with 17
ways to spell the sound of sh - !

Thank you to
Actually, pronunciation is the easiest part of Polish. It's pronounced as
it's spelled and vice versa, not like English which is a mish=mash. Get a
Polish grammar that has a pronunciation guide, or listen to some Polish language
tapes. It's not all that hard. I'd never heard Polish before I started
learning it when I was in my mid 20's, and it was easier to learn than German.

I am looking for information on the Oleks of Pennsylvania. Antonio Olek left Poland and arrived in the US in 1907. He went to Chicago, IL and then to Pennsyvania where I found him in the 1920 census. He was married to Tiafila? and then later to Lillian. He had one son John Anthony Olek. I would be glad to exchange information. Thanks for any help you might be able to give me.

Thank you to all you answered. The name was shortened back in the 1890's to
Bogus. When I found the original spelling I couldn't reconcile the spelling
with the way an older family member remembered hearing it as Bow ga SHEF
ski. This family was originally in Clearfield County and many migrated to
Pittsburgh.
Reading Polish language websites and even listing to the sound files hasn't
really helped me. I couldn't get the SHEF sound from ZEW. Although, I did
come up with the Bow ga Shes ski. I need
I believe that would be Bow gus shef ski
