Are there any emigrant lists or emigration records for emigrants that would've possibly sailed from Stettin bound for America (possibly by way of England)? An ancestor of mine and his family are supposed to have arrived in New York in May 1854 (according to naturalization records). I haven't been able to find them on any passenger list for New York during that time period. Early naturalization records have often been of little help in determining the village of origin. Hello Listserve I am writing more specifically to Jim, our listserve operator but thought it might be useful to send this idea tot he total group. I copied Mueller's gazetteer Verzeichnis jenseits der Oder-Neisse gelegenen, unter fremder Verwaltung stehenden Ortschaften. I have been using this quite a bit lately and find it very helpful in locating towns and for gaining the Polish name of a town even when I already know the German town. This gaz. seems to cover eastern/Hinter Pommerania, Ober/Upper Siles

Hello James B. and the rest writing about Hammer and muehle/mill I want to ask this question -- is there a way to locate/identify all the Mills in the Province of Posen? This might be important as an alternate research source. There supposedly were Mill records, recorded for all the families that used a particular Mill and that was usually a number of villages per Mill. For the second time, I have found a semi-readable reference to the town my great-grandfather and his family came from. Have checked in several sources, to no avail. The town, identified in the 1880s, starts with WOLA, followed (one word) by what might be COWA, and completed with JCZKI (perhaps). Elsewhere, the GGF's daughter identified her birthplace simply as WOLA in Rogowie. In the Hamburg passenger list, the family is listed as being from Rogowo. Hello Pozen folks I'm currently in the process of having a diary, which fell into my possession somewhat accidentally, translated from old German Script. It is apparently the diary of a soldier who in 1914 takes a train from his home in Posen towards the direction of the Western Front. Halbstadt, was in Kreis Marienburg, District of Danzig, province of West Prussia. Protestant records should have been kept in 'Schadwalde' (Catholic were in Gross Lesewitz). Have you checked the LDS catalog for records from Schadwalde (or for Gross Lesewitz, if Jakob was Catholic)? Civil records were kept in Schadwalde as well, after 1874.
