1. [Q-R] Re: QUAKER-ROOTS-D Digest V03 #282 [1]
I have a family named Isiah Smith whose father was a Moses Smith. Isiah had a daughter named Temperance Smith. She was born in South Carolina. Temperance's mother was Elizabeth Grice. Elizabeth Grices family was from North Carolina prior to moving to South Carolina, Georgia, Ala. and finally back to North Carolina. I am not sure where the Smith family originated from in America. Temperance Smith Richards is buried at the Masonic Cemetery, at the convention center, in Dallas, Texas. her husband Thomas Richa

4. Re: [Q-R] Julius Caesar [1]
I'd guess that claims of descent from Julius Caesar are based on Geoffrey of Monmouth. He wrote in his 'History of the Kings of Britain' (Penguin Classics, 1966, p120-122) about the Emperor Claudius' conquest of Britain : 'Arvirargus took refuge in Winchester and Claudius followed him there ..... [Claudius] preferred to subdue them by plot and diplomacy rather than icur the hazard of a battle. He therefore proposed peace to Arvirargus, promising to give him his own daughter .... [Arvirargus] submitted to C

My sincere thanks to Gilligan, Clare and Bowman re: your timely input to my inquiry concerning MANLIF/MANLOVE. Also, I finally recalled the OZMENT who is listed in Hinshaw's book, page 47. He was Walter R. OZMENT (b.1869, Guilford Co., NC; d. 1958, Santa Ana, CA). He attended the Greensboro Meeting. Dwight W. Ozment Mechanicsville, VA

9. Re: [Q-R] "Martyr" John Smith (b. 1681) of Dartmouth, Mass., and Chester Co.... [1]
Dear Mark - Its 11.30pm here and I've locked the book away. However, I'll have a look in the the morning and try to put a family tree together from the information I have. I'll also have a look through other books in our library. John Smith appears to have been a "weighty ffriend" in his time, so there must be more information about him. Derek
10. [Q-R] Tom Williams print of Hoopes home [1]
Is anyone familiar with the artwork of Tom Williams? I believe he had a studio near Lenape Bridge in Chester County, PA. I am told a certain print of his may picture the home of one of the area's Quaker Hoopes families. I'd like to confirm that and determine when the print was made, where the house is, and which Hoopes family it was, i.e., how it is descended from the original Hoopes immigrants. The print in question shows of the side of a colonial-looking fireplace and an adjacent closet door. On the

12. [Q-R] Surnames Mills and Wright [1]
I am descended from Nathan and Abigail Wright who are listed in the 1850 and 1860 Grant Co., IN census. Their son, Robert Mills Wright, was my g grandfather. The census lists Nathan's birthplace as SC and Abigail's as TN. Nathan's occupation is listed as miller. In the 1860 census they lived in Jonesboro Mill Twp. (The 1850 census info I have lists only Grant Co., not a twp.) Their first three children were born in OH but I have no idea in what area of that state. Their later children, includin

14. [Q-R] Fox [1]
Can SKS help me out, my mother always told us that her grandmother was of Quaker origin. She was Jane Fox born in Cromford Derbyshire in 1840. I know she married in St Peter's Prestbury Cheshire to Adam Hammersley in 1867 but would really like to find out if indeed she did come from Quaker stock. Or is it true that if a Quaker marries out of the faith all record of them is distroyed. Alice

18. [Q-R] Age of majority for a male 1782, NC & more [1]
My research is just moving into Quakers and NC and I'm full of questions. What was the age of majority for a male in NC, 1782? Would the Quakers have differed on this? Where is 'the Narrows'? "The Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy, 1750-1930" Vol I, Pasquotank (Symons Creek) MM, p. 135 CLARK "1780, 10,18. Micajah (Clerk), of the Narrows, rqcuc. 1782, 4,17. 22. [Q-R] Quaker Records [1]
This is in reply to a query dated 06/06/2003 from Carol in which she would like to know directions in locating records of Quaker Meetings in the late 1700s and early 1800s in the area which now comprises Washington and Greene Counties in Pennsylvania. I am surely not the best authority on this matter, but I might give a general view of the situation. Friends began to settle in the southwest area of Pennsylvania, below Pittsburgh, before the Revolutionary War. Eventually a number of Meetings were

24. [Q-R] Mooresville Friends meeting house c 1870-1872 [1]
In researching the Macy homestead project, my husband and I went to Plainfield and looked through relevant time periods in the White Lick Quarterly, Monthly, and Men's Minutes. We had read published reports that the land was purchased in 1884 and the building built thereafter. We got the deed for the land from the Morgan Co Recorder's office and found the land was purchased in 1864; therefore a typo had been perpetuated in books of local and state-wide interest. FYI, here is a synopsis of what we fo
