1. [Q-R] Re: Meeting House Partitions [1]
The frame wall which separates the men from the women in a Friends meeting house is called a partition. This architectural element has an interesting origin. The earliest Monthly Meetings in England seem to have been held without separating men from the women. It is true that the women did not express their sense of the issues at hand as easy as the men did. There are several explanations for this, many of which have already been expressed here. During the 1670s, a small division took place in England. Th
2. [Q-R] Re: Perquimans/Pasquotank [1]
When Wm Edmundson arrived in North Carolina, there were at least two Friends families residing there: Henry and Hannah Phelps and Christopher and Hannah Nicholson. Both of these families had been persecuted in Massachusetts as Friends. They sold their property in Essex Co. MA and moved to NC in the early 1660s. I have a copy of the Nicholson deed of sale. To my knowledge no one has ever claimed that any of the other early Friends in the Albemarle region moved there with Quaker sympathies. It seems that the
3. Re: [Q-R] WHAT IS A QUAKER [1]
The best source for understanding Quakerism of the 1600s and early 1700s is a book by David H. Fischer, _Albion's Seed_, which was published about a decade ago. This is by far the most objective account of the first century of Quakerism, although it describes Quaker culture and not Quaker history. 4. Re: [Q-R] Pine Woods Preparative Meeting, Rowan/Davidson Co., NC??? [1]
Tim raised two questions. First, the Centre MM book of births, marriages, and deaths survives from the 18th century. I have looked at it on occasion. The important idea here is that what appears in EAQG is NOT monthly meeting minutes, as is often assumed by researchers -- EAQG consists of extracts from the records. Second, Pine Woods meeting was located in Davidson County. In _A Valiant People: Deep River Quarterly Meeting of Friends_, p. 2: Pine Woods was ... in the northwest quadrant of the intersection

8. Re: [Q-R] WHAT IS A QUAKER [0.979374]
My attempt to learn something about why my ancestors (all Quakers) left England and Ireland led me to a couple of paperbacks by historian Christopher Hill. Having grown up in North Carolina in an active Quaker environment, I had come to understand that Quakerism was created by George Fox, perhaps with some help from the "still small voice". The two books are _The World Turned Upside Down, Radical Ideas During the English Revolution_ from Penguin Books and _The Century of Revolution, 1603-1714_ from W. W.

14. [Q-R] Stovall (Stowell, Stoffold) family [0.979374]
Greetings, Batholomew Stovall was my 7th greatgrandfather. I have recently found papers where he emigrated to American from Albury, County Surrey, England, in 1684. There is strong indication that his family in England were members of the Society of Friends. His parents were George and Joan Stoffold (I have seen records with various spellings.......Stoffold, Stowell, and Stovall). Baartholomew was born August 24, 1665. Does anyone have a connection with this family? Or, does anyone have access

16. [Q-R] Thomas and William PENN [0.979374]
Does anyone know what became of Thomas and William PENN after 1732? Did they stay in this country? Where did they settle? Did they die here? What state and county? John Penn, son of William Penn, did not die in Kent County, Delaware, but because of his property owned in this county, his will was probated there August 13, 1747, after being probated in England nearly a year earlier.

19. Re: [Q-R] Howland Quakers [0.979374]
Hi, Barbara...as I have said, this is all new to me...the Quaker connection, that is. Here is my background on the Howlands: From Henry Howland and Mary Newland; thru their son Zeoth Howland and Abigail October: (II) Zoeth Howland, son of Henry Howland, was born in Duxbury, Mass. He moved, with his wife Abigail, to Dartmouth, and there embraced the Quaker religion, his father and wife also being members of that church. Zoeth and Abigail Howland were tried and fined for their religious faith, it being

I have been exchanging e-mail on parents of Thomas Ellis who m Jane Hugh at Gwynedd Meeting. Rowland Ellis, whose pedigree is given in a variety of places, was a promenent early settler in Bryn Mawr, PA. His family information is rooted in a hand written document published by Glenn in MERION IN THE WELSH TRACT, which is reproduced in that book. This document, apparently dated about 1697, is comprehensive in listing all of his children and ancestors to that point in time. No Thomas is listed as a

Dear Sallie Mattox - I have no Wicker connection but I do live in central Hamilton County, Indiana, and have access to some Quaker records here. I also do some genealogy lookups for the local county historical society and would be glad to check local material for you. From the Friends records, I find that Albert and wife Luella were first recieved in membership at East Branch (later and now called Gray) meeting on 1/5/1886.
