Ellen,
Welcome to the (Mc)Qualter(s) / (Mc)Walter(s)group. There should be several
members excited to meet you as many of our ancestors came from Tuam. The
McWalters name had several variations and some of the ancestors used several
different versions in the same generation. There is also a Rootsweb group
which you could subscribe: QUALTERS-L@rootsweb.com.
Hopefully someone will connect. Your Bridget may be the same Bridget of
Peter McWalters on this group. How about it, Pete?????

As I understand it, Qualtr has its root in Mc-Walter with the Mc becoming contracted to Qualtr and ough meaning son of like Mc or Mac
I suggest you go to the QUALTROUGH website at http://home.austarnet.com.au/lions and click on Origins and that will give you a fairly in-depth dissertation on the name Qualtrough, Qualter/s as it relates to the Isle of Man.

Hi Rita, thanks so much for finding all this info at the Ellis Island
site! If you can, I think it would be terrific to see the McWalters
list, as well.
I hope your pup is feeling better now, although I am glad he saved
the diarrhea for the middle of the night! Kind of like providence,
hmm?

Hi everyone -
Luckily (?) for me, my puppy has a bad case of diahrrea and had me up at all hours of the night last night. I say it was luck because since I was up at 3:00 a.m., I decided to try the Ellis Island website, which you probably know is almost impossible to get in to.
Anyway, I did get im it and was able to copy the following information:

I have been researching the QUALTROUGH family world wide for most of the past 25 years and in 1984 wrote a book called A QUOTA OF QUALTROUGHS by EA Barlow (me) and Joy McDougall, published in New Zealand.
This book includes a section on the name QUALTROUGH name and variants QUALTERS/QUALTER erc.
The book has now been put online at THE QUALTROUGH FAMILY website at http://home.austarnet.c
Thank you for writing Rita. Yes the website is coming along well, and
developing very quickly. Only went live in January.
The only connections the Qualtroughs have at this point that I have found is
with a family in Liverpool when the name changed about the 1850s and over 3
generations it went from Qualtrough (from IOM) to
Qualtrough/Qualters/Qualter and then finally to Qualter. See chart 15 and
chart 18 in the book A QUOTA OF QUALTROUGHS on the website
While I have no direct involvement in Qualter/Qua
Hello Elizabeth!
Welcome to the list. I found browsing the Qualtrough Family Website very
interesting and appreciate your efforts in getting this information out.
My research on my family name (originally McWalter of Co. Galway, Ireland)
has not come across a link to Qualtrough but I've learned not to discount
any information provided!
Keep up the great work!
Best regards,
Rita Qualter

Here is a posting from a Qualters researcher who has opted not to be
on the list.
She would like that this be available for future researchers.
MARTIN QUALTER..born 1806 in Lackagh Parish. His mother was named
MARGARET NEE ( we have not been able to find out anything about her
but know that
NEE was a common name there at that time.)
His PARENTS were probably MICHAEL AND MARGARET QUALTER from the
townland of
Carrowntobber in Athenry Parish. They appear in the 1821 Census of
Ireland with their sons MARTI
I'm not trying to confuse anyone, actually the opposite. There is another
Bill Walters on the WALTERS-L list so I'm using my nickname Wally.
Bill Walters.. or Wally - Whatever!
I'm here! Is that you, Bill?
Can I presume that if you don't show a century for the arrival (i.e.
5/13/78), this means it was 1978? Or could it be 1878? Also, could you
cite your source?
I don't have any Qualter passengers but, as a volunteer with ISTG, I am
transcribing the ships manifest for the Oceanic which arrived in NYC on
4/30/1904 since my grandfather, Peter McWalter is shown on this manifest.
Best regards,
Rita

Does anybody have ANY genealogical info on Martin? I think his parents were
John QUALTER and Nellie MCKIN, who may have lived at one time in Co. Mayo,
Kilcommon Parish.
Interested in knowing Martin's pedigree. He came to Philadelphia, Pa USA in
1892, after marrying his wife Catherine Poniard from Castle Lambert,
Attymon/Athenry, Co. Galway. He died in Philadelphia, PA in 1939.
Thanks,
Keith
