1. Re: [QUEEN] RE: Queen Names [1]
I have an Albert L. Queen, b. Mar 4, 1868 in Lewis, West Virginia. He may have migrated to Georgia, since he has been baptisted by the LDS in the Atlanta Georgia Temple. I have his father and mother if you feel this is the correct Albert L. Queen. 2. Re: [QUEEN] Sweeping Yards [1]
Gene, I am glad you mentioned this. I had forgotten about it. I grew up in North West Missouri during the depression of the late 20's and 30's. We did not always mow our yard. We had a number of shade trees where grass did not seem to grow well underneath. We would sit in these areas in the shade and would often did sweep them so they looked better. My mother, a Queen, came from Haywood County, NC. Maybe she brought the idea from there. Lee L. ---- Original Message ----- From: "O Eugene Queen" <
3. [QUEEN] Margaret Eliza Jarrell [1]
Hey all, In my file I originally had that Margaret Newton d/o William Newton and Rhody Newton (Rhody married John Canipe the 2nd time),married Isaac Jarrell . On Reily's information from the Old Tryon Genealogical Society Bulletin 1998:: In 1864 Estate settlements.... Eliza Jarrell is mentioned as being a d/o Rhody Newton--an heir of Captain Benjamin Newton. I think this sums up the fact that Margaret Eliza Newton married Isaac Jarrell. Dianne
4. [QUEEN] John Calvin Queen [1]
Dianne and all, I'm almost, but not yet convinced that John Calvin Queen (b. ca 1850), son of Meredith Queen (b. ca 1815) and Elizabeth is the Calvin Queen who married Christine Jarrells. John Calvin was age 35 and single in the HH of his parents in 1880 Rutherford. In 1880 a Christeny Jarrells was age 17 and single and in the HH of her parents, Adam and Margaret Jarrell. The Jarrells were in HH 112. Meredith Queen was in HH 129. After 35 yr of being single, what, short of a shotgun, would have caused
5. [QUEEN] Sweeping Yards [1]
Oh, the memories you bring back. I know folks in northern GA who still swept their yards on up until 15-20 years ago. and just outside Athens there's an old couple who still keep their yard bare and sweep it almost daily. My grandmother always kept a straw broom hanging on a nail behind the kitchen door. She used it to sweep up dirt tracked in the back door, cornmeal spilled and cleaning out a cobweb from the ceiling. When that ol straw broom got worn down too far she would grab a knife and go out
6. Re: [QUEEN] Olive Vine Queen [1]
That sounds like a mis-communication to me, though, with William Senior's 15 kids or so -- we're still trying to pin that down? -- dates can get really tricky. For instance, I've got an ancestor in another line in 1800s North Carolina who was only 8 years younger than his youngest paternal uncle. (Similar numbers of kids.) 8. [QUEEN] Sweeping Yards [1]
Anyone on this list ever hear parents or grandparents speak of "sweeping yards"? I'm blessed to have an 83 yr old mom still doing rather well, mowing her lawn, tilling her small garden, etc. This evening we were sitting under the wooden shelter where she keeps her car and I noticed a broom lying across a few nails near the rafters. Yep, it was an ordinary straw broom - of the type I remember from 50-60 years ago. We would gather broomsedge, then using strips of old cloth would tie a 2" or so bundle tog
9. [QUEEN] Oldest Researcher on Queen-L [1]
Aw shucks, I'm gonna do it. Carol, swat me with a switch if I cause any trouble. All these recollections have me to wondering, especially after Father's Day at church yesterday when a 96 year old father was recognized as the oldest father in attendance. If ya don't want to play, I understand. But, I'm looking for the oldest researcher on this list. Man or woman. Let's start with age 75. Anyone want to 'fess up that they're older than 75? 13. [QUEEN] Julius W. Queen [1]
Help! I was doing some browsing in my files today and going over all these Queen posts. I found that I had Julius W. Queen, son of Alfred Queen and Mary Polly Jarrel Queen married to Amanda Crotts, d/o Avery Edward & Sarah Newton Crotts. I originally thought this came out of the Posey Downs book, but I had a note under Amanda as such: 1900 Rutherford County Census says she had 3 children with 2 living at that time. Avery Jarrell, Julius' cousin, age 13 b. 1887 was living with them. Who were Aver

20. [QUEEN] Samuel Queen Question [1]
O.K. family. Those of this line. Clear this up for me. I have several records that show the children of Samuel and DIcey Rolls: However, on one it lists a Henson as a child born about 1784. On another it lists a James Houston bn Oct 10 1808 as a child. Which is correct? ALso, one report that I have lists James Houston as the son of Samuel Queen and Nancy unknown. Can someone clarify this for me. Also, did James Houston marry Isabella Bryson? When and where? Also, is there a Samuel bn abt

25. Re: [QUEEN] Sweeping Yards [1]
Hello Gene and other cousins: Please excuse my late response on this subject - late reading email this week. I am in my early fifties and grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta (where I remain still). I well remember folks sweeping their yards (no one had a lawn, just yards). In the suburbs, most of us had grass to cut, but some still held to sweeping the yards. I recall when I was very young, we had grass around the biggest area of the yard, which Dad cut with a totally man-powered push mover, but Mom swep
