I guess my theory about John M. and Sarah Cooper Ragsdale being the parents of my John W. Ragsdale, won't work.
I've seen one report that says Sarah Cooper Ragsdale married Gustavius Gilbert in 1836. That knocks my theory out.
I wonder what happened to John M. Ragsdale.
Billie
I wish I could help, but family history (knowledge) is a little sparse here
too.

Does anybody have the children of Captain William Ragsdale born about 1740 and either his first wife Mary Bryan or his second wife Ann Green? William and Mary married in Chesterfield County and William and Ann Green married in Prince George County. I'm just curious about their children.

This is about all I have on Abel,
Another researcher has listed in the Family Group Record of the Ancestral
File of the LDS Church, the following; The son of Augustine Rowland was, Richard
Rowland, b. abt. 1756, in Prince George Co., VA, he married Rachel Ragsdale,
she was born about 1729 in Prince George Co. Rachelb
Anyone know to which family this Ragsdale belongs?
William P. Ragsdale married Margaret Garriott, 1857 Carroll Co., KY.
Good to see some activity on the list again. Let's keep it up.

In my branch of Ragsdales, often the first son was named after both
grandfathers. My great-grandfather was Joseph Robert Ragsdale, after his
father's father Joseph Ragsdale and his mother's father Robert Trammell.

Dear Billie:
If I'm not mistaken, we share the same great-grandfather. A couple years
ago, I started to research our family tree, knowing that my grandfather was
from Coleman, TX. My two sisters picked up the search and found a lot more
info. My sister Dolores (deemonahon@yahoo.com) could help you out, as well
as my sister Julia (jragsdale@capco.state.tx.us), who lives in Austin, TX.
We found our Ragsdale family roots also from the Lamar Co. census. Good
luck!

May,
What do you know about your Ragsdale line? If they are as elusive as mine,
they could be one and the same.
Hey, I have a picture of my John Ragsdale......If I only knew here to put it
so everybody could see it.

I'm sorry guys, I have Bill's book too. I get so wrapped up in what I"m doing that I don't think to look before I ask; or maybe it's just easier this way. LOL I'm looking at those people with the name William , in Virginia that could have had a child that fathered my John William Ragsdale. I know it's a long way to go about it but it's a fascinating journey.

Hi Arleta,
Thank you for your help.
This is the right John W. Ragsdale and family. This wife's name was Mary
Jane "Molly" Pruitt. They are also listed in the 1910 Cass County, Texas
census but I can't find them after that. I wrote the office of vital
statistics and asked if they could search if I give them a name only and
"died sometime after 1910". She said they will give it a try. I'll send
that information to her and keep you guys posted.

Also in the 1880 census for Lamar County, Texas is a S.A. Ragsdale (female) born 1820 Alabama. (John W.'s mother was born in Alabama.) S.A. is living with her son-in-law Ben Casner and daughter M.E. 20. M.E. was born in Mississippi (same as John W. and her father was born in Virginia, same as John). M.E. was 3 years younger than John. Sounds like it might behoove me to try to relate these folks to John W. Ragsdale. I can't find them in Mississippi on the 1860 census. I can't find them anywhere until 1
Ron,
I am so totally impressed with the information you have pulled together.
I have a true desire to know this family but I feel so inadequate; I get so
confused when the names are repeated over and over. I spend a tremendous
amount of time backtracking and linking these folks to their line just so I
can keep them straight.(Good grief that sounds like whining, I'm sorry.)
This past July I was able to attend a Cockerham reunion in Williamsburg,
Virginia. (My Cockerham line married into the Ragsdale lin

My Ragsdale is Pleasant M. Ragsdale, born in TN in 1831. I am not sure of
the place of birth but I think it was Williamson Co. His descendants are
found later in Dickson Co., Humphreys Co. I actually know very little about
my Ragsdales. Joan Hatley

Joan, I don't know anything about Pleasant M Ragsdale. But I do know about the Robert Ragsdale b 04 Apr 1874. I have never heard of his being born in Dickson Co. He is buried in Taylor Cemetary, as are my parents. He did marry Judith Izora Wills and his brother John Campbell Ragsdale who was my father, married her sister: Dora Kate Wills. Both Robert and my father were sons of Elcana and Mary Ann Grimes Ragsdale. All moved from Williamson Co to Humphreys Co before the 1900 census. If I can help you with mo
Paula,
I'm not familiar with Coleman but there were several children of John
Ragsdale and his second wife that left Lamar County and went other places.
Anything is possible. I will write your sisters and see if they have
anything that ties to my line.
For further consideration, the families of my John W. Ragsdale were:
John W. and Alice Bailey Ragdale (M.A.?? on census) were:
William Aaron b. 1880 My second great-grandfather
Anna b. 1882
Ella b. 1883
2nd wife
John W. and Mary Jane "Molly" Pruitt Ragsdal
First, a question for Joan Hatley: Who are the descendants of Pleasant M Ragsdale who are found later in Humphreys Co TN? I ask because descendants of my great, grandfather Hiram Ragsdale b 1815 in Williamson Co TN, moved to Humphreys Co in the big gap between 1780 and 1900.
Secondly, someone asked for information on Abel Ragsdale b 1795/1801 and appeared on Williamson Co TN census of 1820, on Madison Co TN census of 1830, then in MS on 1840 etc. I don't know if any proof has been found but most resear

You guys are great. I was afraid this board had gone completely quiet. I haven't seen any action here in awhile.
Just out of curiosity, is it alright to ask about those Ragsdale families that were in Lamar County, Texas in 1880? There were several there and I would like to know how they tied together.....if they did.
For those that have taken the time to answer my query, you are the best. I thank you so much. Whether you had information or just wrote to tell me you didn't have anything on my line, yo
Hi Becky,
That's what I was hoping to discover. Either John William Ragsdale might
have been named after his father and paternal grandfather, or else maybe he
was named after both grandparents. (or he was just named something his
folks liked.)
Thanks so much for the feedback,
Billie
