Thanks for the post. Sometime ago I read an article on census takers who were instructed not to record Indians. Census takers were paid by the head count, so rather than loose the commission when they ran across Indians they simply recorded them as Colored. Although freed slaves often took the surname of the family they had served, and that could be the case here as my ancestor Archibald Moore had slaves before the war, and it is logical that some may have taken his surname.
