Shirley Rhea, 53, of Bristol Tennessee, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at her
home.
She was a native of Bristol Tennessee and a lifelong resident of the Bristol
area.
She was a homemaker, a member of the GWRRA Chapter H of Abingdon, and a
member of the Jackson Memorial Church.
Mrs. Rhea was the widow of Paul Matthew Rhea.
Survivors include two daughters, Paula Rhea Mason of Castlewood, and Becky
Rhea Billings of Bristol Tennessee; two sisters, Linda Cross and Patricia
Ford, both of Bristol

Thanks for the post.
Sometime ago I read an article on census takers who were instructed not to
record Indians. Census takers were paid by the head count, so rather than loose
the commission when they ran across Indians they simply recorded them as Colored.
Although freed slaves often took the surname of the family they had served,
and that could be the case here as my ancestor Archibald Moore had slaves before
the war, and it is logical that some may have taken his surname.

Is the James Rea Jr., who moved to Wilkes Co., NC, the son of James (who
married Johannah ?) or is he the son of William (who married Elizabeth
Gordon)?
