Although I have no direct RHEA ancestors of whom I am aware, I am
researching a James RHEA who married a woman I believe to have been my
gr.gr.grandmother, Mrs. Sarah J. "Sally" GOODMAN. I believe this James RHEA
was a son of Robert RHEA (1759-1834) and Martha Sarah MEEK, and a grandson
of William RHEA (1715-1802) and Elizabeth CLARK.
In a list of RHEA descendants published in the RHEA Rootsweb mailing list on
30 June 1998, this James RHEA is said to have been born on 25 April 1799 in
Greenbriar Co.
To Dennis,
I have also read of the Rea family coming from France only the name was
originally Reaugh or Reagh which means from a rugged, rocky place. Has
anyone considered that the Reagh's might have gone to Scotland/England
from France? Mary Rea Eubanks

Since we don't have a web page, I thought it fitting that we have a Query

I am fascinated by this french connection. My mother sang mountain songs to me
a s child and one of them was about the dome of Notre Dam in Paris. There are
no french connections in ancestral lines that i am aware of. Could this be my
line and a clue to my ancestor John Rea/Rhea/Ray

Wondering if someone can help with three things:
I'm looking for the names of the 8 children that Samuel's Rea's obituary says
he had.
I know about George, my ancestor, and the three adult children (Edmond, Mary
and Matilda) who were living with him in the 1880 census, but would love to
know the names of the others. They lived in Erie Co., Pa.
Also searching for any evidence that George Rea (1823-1888) was in the Civil
War. There is a marker on his grave, but the National Archives apparently has

So far I do not fit into any of the Rhea family circles. My Elizabeth Rhea
was born circa 1800 in VA, according to her daughter's death certificate. We
have a marriage notice in 1817 in Logan County, Kentucky for Betsy Rhea and
Jeptha Windsor b.circa 1789. Our Elizabeth was about 17 when she married a
Windsor. This Rhea/Windsor marriage is all we can find in the U.S. They
moved to Madison County, Illinois and they divorced about 1833-34. He
remarried right away but Elizabeth didn't remarry until 1836 to a B

Hi, Folks,
I'm back, and raring to go. Want to find out more about my Thomas Rhea, who
died in 1810 in Ky. Where in Kentucky? and does anyone know what happened to
the rest of his children. I have alot of info on James his son, but have
nothing on his two daughters, and only the first name of his first son's wife.
Thomas m. to Patsy.
By the way in case any of you newbies don't know, I am related to William and
Elizabeth Clark Rhea by way of their son James Rhea who was married to
Elizabeth Meek. Their son
As most of you know, among the various spellings of Rhea, REAGH was the
preferred spelling until late in the 18th Century, at least among the
Archibald Rhea descendants (sons, William, Archibald, and Robert). I
believe that Rev. Joseph Rhea was "REAGH" when he and his family arrived
in the Colonies in 1769. Although I have not seen it, I am told that he
was Joseph REAGH on the passenger list of the ship on which he arrived.
Among the three brothers, Robert's family used that spelling longer than
did his
Although I do not feel that I 'belong' in this group, as my REA's appear
not to be related to any that are being researched here, I would like to
post my findings (in case it helps someone).
Yesterday I went to FHC to view the microfilm on Clogher Clergy and
Parish #1696604. There were three REA's listed:

I received the following message from Bill Johnson who is seeking
information about Alfred Rhea and his daughter, Anna (Rhea) Meredith.
It was in HTML format, so I couldn't forward the original. He asked
that I send the message to RHEA-L, hoping that someone can help him.
Robert Perry Rhea

am doing research on my family. My great grandmother's name is Anna

I'm not hung on the origin of the name so much as I was trying to solve an
old family mystery or disprove bad documentation. We have one document
written by another family member 4 generations ago that claims John W.
Rea's father (name unknown) was French and was a stowaway on a vessel
(don't know which one) when he came to America. John W. was born 1809
somewhere in or around Greenville, SC. I've not been able to find any
birth records about John W. in SC nor do I know who his father was. My
inquiry
Does anyone have a record of a Rhea marrying a Hodge? I am particularly
looking at the wife of James Hodge b. 1800 in TN, her name was Mary but I
don't know her maiden name.
I would like to know if each one of these Rhea's has been placed in one of
your families. I recognize many of the names. Would each one of you send to
the list, the name that fits in your family, and explain if you have proof?
You don't have to list the proof word for word, but list as birth cert. obit,
will, deed, pension, etc. I think this will help all of us.

My grandfather, Robert Wiley Rhea/Ray, was from the Knoxville area and had sisters
Pearl and Lois, and one unknown, and at least one brother Ernest. I have been told
that their father was John Rhea married to a Redwine. The dates are close and the
location, as well. It has been said that the sister that I don't know the name of

Hi,
On the other hand, the French could have a name pronounced like "Ray". As a
matter of fact there is a place just west of La Rochelle named Ile de Re'.
