Dear Friends,
The following letter represents a break from transcription of letters from
Frank H. Rhea to Elizabeth Rachel (Rhea) Clair. The third and final of those
letters will follow next week. This letter was found among the papers of
Frank H. Rhea by his niece, Louise Riegger. I have two typescripts. One
apparently was made by Louise, and it contains a note to Liz Hartline which
reads, "Elisabeth, maybe some day you will run across some one who is a
descendant of this James or Rhoda." I made the other
I've just read about the November Rhea roll call in among about 500
messages collected in my in-box while I was in Portland, OR for two
weeks. I was out there to try to find out what was wrong with my son
John. On Nov. 20 I brought him to the medical center here and the
diagnosis was confirmed: My handsome, 6-foot, 200-pound, once healthy
son has multiple sclerosis. Please remember him in your prayers.
I have two Rhea lines: James Rhea who lived in Rockbridge Co., VA and
married Mary Paul, daughter of J
While sorting letters, I came upon two typescripts of a letter from Betsy
Laurence (sic) addressed to Mr. James Rhea, Waverly, Morgan Cty., Ill. It is
datelined "Monroe Cty Ky May 22nd, 1852." A sub-address inside the letter
reads, "To: James & Rhoda Rhea, Adam, Virlindia, Vancil." Do you have a copy
of this letter? One of my typescripts was found among the remnants of Frank
Rhea's papers. I made the other, and from the looks of It was working from a
photocopy of the original since I carefully noted tears,

Patricia,
Do you have anymore information on John L. Rhea? Date of Birth Father,
Children? What does L abbreviate? My G-Grandfather was John L Rhea, who was
in Knoxville in 1900. and died there some time later. He was born in 1868.
Thanks so much. Dr. Bob!

Dear descendants of Rev. Joseph Rhea:
I recently received the microfilms of THE PRESTON AND VIRGINIA PAPERS,
compiled by Lyman C. Draper. There was a slight reference in the
abstracts printed in book form so I ordered the full page copies. This
letter answers a question I have long had regarding the time that Joseph
and his son, John Rhea, visited the frontier lands with the idea of
purchase. It has been especially meaningful to me to discover that
Colonel William Preston was the person
I don't know if I sent this to the list or not. It is the 1840 Washington

Don and other interested Listers,
I just this week received a gedfile from an AUSTIN Lister.
I hope I have read it correctly. It backs up what I have been told by
another researcher.
Martha's parents: William AUSTIN & Rebecka MOSES
Martha's grandparents: Stephen "Baldy" AUSTIN & Dorcas PINSON
I have dates and places if you wish them. Contact me personally and I will
send them.

I don't see any reason why you all can't post your line of descent, as long
as it only includes the direct line, no siblings, etc. Perhaps some
connections could be made.

I am very much interested in a letter from Betsy Laurence. I have several
pre civil war letters, written to different members of the family of Betsy,
by her; and by Lucy Lawrence, James H. Lawrence, etc.. In one of the letters
you sent the letter said that Rhoda Rhea Lankton had moved to LeRoy, Ks.
That answers a question we in the family have had for some time. Virlinda
Lawrence Rhea lived in Ks with her son John Lawrence Rhea and James Harvey
Rhea at different times. We wondered why she was in

First of all - thanks for posting this information.
Second - Since P.V. Rhea is my 4th great grandfather, I was trying to match
up the household members on the 1840 census. Here are the family members I
have and when they were born. Since the only ones that don't fit are the
ones with appx year of birth and they would fit if shuffled a couple of
years, I believe this is correct.
Does anyone have any differing opinions?
If so would you please let me know....... Kathryn

I see that your are a bit more of a cousin to the late, great
Frank H. Rhea than I am.
Which brings up the question. Do you think it worthwhile
to put a few Frank Rhea letters to assorted relatives that
I have on line? I also have photocopies of the slim file of
remaining Frank H. Rhea material (nothing stunning in
it) that Louise Riegger gave Liz Hartline. I'd be willing
to do this, but of course it would take time (and space).
I must admit I've been for the most part out of the Rhea
business since Liz
