Dear Pat H, I'm Milt Rhea in Palm Desert in CA A while back we discussed the fact that most likely your great grandfather John Lawrence Rhea and my grandfather James Lawrence Rhea might be the person. I recently found my grandpa on familysearch.org and he married Mahalia A. White on May 4th 1851 at Oskaloosa,Iowa. This is where my grandfather was born in 1863 so I think I'm on the right track. Rhea Cousins, Some time ago I ran across an item by a person who said that census takers were only paid to record whites, slaves or Free People of Color. When an Indian person was found, that person was recorded as slave or "Black" in order for the census taker to get to get paid. We have never been able to connect our Rhea to Indian origin though like your post I and many others have Indian ancestry legends in our families.
