I noticed in your lineage that your William Rhea who married Elizabeth Clark
you have as the son of Archibald Rhea and Ann.
In my files I have this William Rhea as the son of Matthew Rhea and an
unknown wife. I have Matthew's first wife as Elizabeth McCLain. I have
Matthew's children by Elizabeth McClain as Abraham, James, Margery, Agnes and
Margaret (c1722-1803) and Matthew's children by the unknown wife as William
(died 1801/2), Isaac, Samuel and Matthew.
Can you clarify this? Thanks.

There was one name on the list, spelled Ray, Amelia with numbers following

The people that transcribed the list said there is no known reasoning for
the numbers.
Maybe somebody can use this.
I read something interesting I thought I would share with you. In 1717 the
American frontier was just outside of Philadelphia.

Re: Who did Jehu Stephens Rhea belong to:
Here is how it reads. Court records indicate that all but one of Mary

living with James C. Wright, the administrator of her estate. Another son,
Louis L. Rhea, 1797-1861, married Martha Halloway 1807-1880, in 1824. The

In regards to the different spellings of Rhea, Ray , Rea.
I know how that goes, my husband's grandfather's name was Kelliher. On his
naturalization papers, it was spelled three ways. Keliher, Kelleher, and
Kelliher. He said that he was the only one who knew for sure how it was
supposed to be spelled, so he was not going to worry. Unfortunately without
his corrections, it became Kelleher. He said he got tired of explaining it
everytime he turned around.

To clear up possibly something about the Rhea spelling. What I have is that
the Rhea that I am related to had many different spellings. Rea, Ray, Wray
were not one of them. The name was pronounced Ray, but very rarely spelled
that way. I have only seen it spelled Ray in census records.
But some of the other ways it was spelled were: Reah, Rheah, Reaugh,
Reaough, Reaoh, and Reach. Our name comes from Matthew Campbelll, a Scottish
Rebel who in 1685 after the Scottish Rebellion was thrown in the dungeon of

After this the chart becomes confusing, as he believed that Matthew Campbell
Rhea, had been married twice, and that Rev. Joseph Rhea was a son.
I believe we have proven that Rev. Joseph was Matthew II son, who was son of
Matthew Campbell Rhea.
He lists a second wife as Elizabeth McLean and children as Abraham, James,
Margery, Agnes, and Joseph, Rev.

Regarding the various spellings of RHEA: I am no authority, but in my
limited research it appears to me that in Virginia REA and RHEA are two
different families. The Rea family appears to have come from Tidewater in
the 1600's and the Rhea family came down the Valley of Virginia in the
1700's.
