As we had a long drive, I ask for "just one hour". Boy, I could have used several days! I rushed and found the Barkley files and started copying. One letter I found may be of interest. It was fr

Does anyone out there know anything about the ancestry or descendancy of this John Rhea. I found it under the Tennessee Chronical site in Monroe County Page? I am a descendant of the Rheas but would really like to know something more about this one to see if he is connected in anyway to my line. My Rheas were from Tennessee. Thankyou. Linda Spivey-Bjorklund 1807 Rhea, with its seat at Dayton, was named for John Rhea who served in the Revolutionary War, was a member of the Tenn

9. [RHEA-L] USS David R. Ray [1]
Hi Fellow Searchers, last night I sent a message to the list about David R. Ray and the US Naval Ship named after him. I need to clear up some confusion. This young man was not my son. My son is alive and serveing on another ship. I just happened to find the name of the USS David R. Ray and thought someone might be searching the line he was in, so sent it to the list. Carole
10. [RHEA-L] Re: Hemp Certificate [1]
Fellow Rhea Researchers: Thought this might be helpful to some of you on the list. We know that William Rhea, Rockbridge and Augusta co., was issued a hemp certificate . If any of you see this mentioned you'll know what it means. A hemp certificate was the same thing as a tobacco certificate. It was a document showing the holder had turned in so many pounds of the named commodity to the warehouse for sale. These certificates were used as cash since there was little hard currency in circulation. In

========================== Early American Trails and Roads ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ~Introduction~ Expansion by Americans from the Atlantic to the Pacific took many years, often spanning generations. During the colonial years, travel was largely North-South. Following the Revolutionary War, citizens of the new nation began to forge westward and were often joined by newly arriving immigrants. Expansion occurred by different paths and a variety of tr

13. [RHEA-L] Early American Trails and Roads: Part 2 [1]
THE NATIONAL ROAD The National Road was originally called the Cumberland Road because it started in Cumberland, Maryland. By 1825, it was referred to as the National Road because of its federal funding. The enabling act for admission of Ohio to the Union in 1803 contained provisions for construction of a road linking the East and West. Congress then passed "An Act to Regulate the Laying Out and Making a Road from Cumberland, in the State of Maryland, to the State of Ohio." In 1811, contracts were sig

16. [RHEA-L] Marriages Performed by Rev. Joseph P. Howe of Montgomery Co. Ky. [1]
Here is the address of this site: Marriages performed by REv. Joseph P. Howe of Montgomery Co. Ky. as recorded in his journal. ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/montgomery/howe/marriage.txt It is 7 pages long. There is a Rhea listed, but there are other names that if you are related to people from Augusta Co. Va. that migrated to Kentucky and were members of the presbyterian church, you're going to find this mind boggling. I found so many people I knew from old records. A lady from the KyBath co. l
17. Re: [RHEA-L] Singleton B. Rhea b. Monroe Co., TN to: Polly [1]
I am not sure how this relates to the large Rhea family, but thought I would tell you that Robert and Sarah Bingham Rhea had a son Robert. He married in 1787 to Mary Stephens. He had a sister Ann Rhea Turk. Her husband Thomas Turk Jr. moved to Tennessee and were living in Blount County when he died in 1833. Their children according to a descendent were James Turk, Robert Turk, Archibald Rhea Turk, Elizabeth Turk, Margaret Turk, William Turk, Hiram Turk, Sally Turk, and Thomas Turk. per Robert Perry Rhea, B
18. [RHEA-L] Grainger County RAY/RHEAs [1]
Hi Alvey, I think most of us have found the family name spelled many different ways. There are as many different reasons for this - as people moved out onto the frontier there was little time for schooling and usually younger family members could neither read nor write, also census takers spelled names phonetically. My family spells the name RHEA and RAY. I can't tell which came first so I look at all of them. My sister thinks that those early Grainger County Ray/Rheas are related to our Hawkins/Hancock/C

Early American Trails and Roads... Continued. See "Early American Trails and Roads: Part 1" for details. THE MOHAWK (IROQUOIS) TRAIL The Mohawk Trail of New York, also known as the Iroquois Trail, extended from Albany west to the eastern end of Lake Erie, where Buffalo is now located. This was the most northerly route through the Appalachian Mountains, leading from New York's Hudson Valley along the Mohawk River on to the Great Lakes. It was used heavily by New York's early emigrants and was much
20. [RHEA-L] William & Margt. Ray of Ohio Co., VA 1807 [1]
For several years I have been looking for my gt-grandmother's (Maud Ray) ancestors. I didn't have much except her name and that she married Robert Sattler of Cincinnati, OH ca 1880, and died before 1900. Yesterday, I learned that she descends from Wm. & Margt. Ray who were in Ohio Co, VA when their son, Joseph was born on 25 NOV 1807. I checked my current atlas and there is no Ohio Co. in VA, but there is one in WV. Back in 1807 was this all VA? Does this William & Margt. Ray sound familiar to anyone?
21. [RHEA-L] Re: [ILMORGAN-L] March is National Women's History Month [1]
Subj: March is National Women's History Month What better way to celebrate than beginning to research your female ancestors? I got this idea from the Reunion Magazine article. The Other Half of Your Genealogy: Researching Women. Yes its true that tracking women in your pedigree is a greater challenge. Women had few rights so their husbands, fathers, and brothers left more records. Don't let that stop you. You just need to be a little more creative in your research. Start by making a chronology
