1. [RHEA] New Rhea connection [1]
Recently, while researching some lines of families who have some relationships among the Rheas in East Tennessee, I came across a surprise revelation when studying the Evans family - a new grandson of Rev. Joseph Rhea. Samuel Massengil in his book 'Massengil, Massengale and Variant' 1931, page 864, writes - Nancy Evans m. Robert M. Rhea, son of James Rhea, and a grandson of Rev. Joseph Rhea, and moved to Paris, Edgar Co. IL. Further, Massengil has transcripts of a letter written by Nancy Evans'

The Snapps are found in Shenandoah County VA very early, before 1800 ~ they spread into WV and the west by 1800 ~ they were not a terribly prolific family and can usually be connected within the hundred years (1800 to 1900) back to Shenandoah County ~ they were prominent in Rockingham and Augusta County also. Many of these VA families can be traced going west in large groups by the same routes. Very interesting broad, general family research. Norma

Dr. Bob & List, Information on the ancestors and descendants of John & Margaret RHEA, two of the seven children of James and Elizabeth RHEA, is plentiful, especially in publications by Ed Foley, Wm. L. Rhea in his 1893/94/95 RHEA FAMILY GENEALOGY (not readily available), Zella Armstrong in NOTABLE SOUTHERN FAMILIES, VOL. II (not very accurate), and by others. 5. Re: [RHEA] New Rhea connection [1]
I was delighted to receive Ed Foley's email of October 9th concerning Robert M. Rhea. I am his great, great granddaughter. Before that time I had been unable to trace Robert M. Rhea and his wife, Nancy, back any further than the year and place of their birth - 1807 in Sullivan City, TN. This information was found in the 1850 census for IL in Edgar County. Robert and Nancy had three children: 1) Angeline b. 1834 in Edgar, 2) David V. b. 1836 in Edgar, and 3) Juretty b. 1838 in Edgar. My great gran

8. [RHEA] James RHEA, Son of Rev. Joseph, on Marriage [1]
While going through the microfilmed copy of James RHEA's diary (Common Place Book) I ran across some interesting material on the subject of Marriage. On a separate sheet of paper (apart from the diary) he wrote the following: "Blountville T. 24 Aug-1814 This morning Eliza- left me to go to see her sister Polly who lives at Samuel Snapps on Nolichucky river- I wish she may come back safe and in good health- if she never returns- I will mourn for the loss of my only female companion." On page 20 of his di

10. [RHEA] Children of James RHEA, son of Rev. Joseph [1]
There seems to be some uncertainty in the literature about the names, dates of birth, and order of birth of the children of James & Elizabeth (Snapp) RHEA. Elizabeth is excluded in some instances, and where she is named, little if any information about her is given. The names and dates of birth of their children are found in his diary, entitled "James Rhea's Common Place Book." The original, which was donated to the Tennessee Historical Society by Mrs. Anne Rhea Bachman HYDE (Mrs. Charles R. HYDE), a gr
