My, my, how the tale grows in the telling! The "experiments" mentioned by John Andrew Prime were not conducted by a chemist, but rather by the schoolboy son of a non-chemist. They were wholly non-quantitative and therefore didn't really show anything at all. What's more, the material tested was the one gravestone material (white marble) that would never be treated with (white) shaving cream anyhow. (Incidentally, that same non-chemist is also convinced that chalk is just as harmful to stones as shaving
