Hi - I notice some discussion about the village (town) of Poolewe. My
great grandfather was William Dingwall. He was born approx. 1834 in
Strath Gairloch and information I have indicates he was a teacher - a
General Assembly Teacher in Poolewe - around 1863. Would anyone know
anything about a school or church in that area at the time? He only
stayed there approximately four years and moved on to Glasgow. He may
have had a relative living there - not sure - I notice Alexander

Dear David,
Here is a passage that might interest you:
"He told me a fascinating story. It came after a discussion on the difficulty
of travelling in certain parts of the Highlands. The hardships he endured
when the last train had gone were, he said, nothing compared with the awful
things that happened to the Scottish troops when the Napoleonic wars were
ended.
He told me that the Highlanders were paid off at Dover and had to walk back
to their homes. So the veterans of Waterloo tightened their kilts
Hi Lilian.
I too had thought that there was no tresspass law in Scotland but after reading "the Lore & Law of Scottish Access"
I am now not sure. A search on that phrase may also get you confused.
I had some recollection that trespass on His/Her Majesties Dockyards was against the law.
I used to roam the hills of Ross-shire fully believing that I was not breaking the law.

Lilian,
I have never read any of Dr. Kennedy. My understanding is that he himself
mentions the Sutherland family, not any biographer or 3rd party. My source
is a close family friend who is a staunch member of the Free Church in
Inverness, whose brother is a Free Church elder in Stornoway and they are
cousins of the famous "Professor MacLeod" who unintentionally split the Free
Church wide open several years ago following his acquittal on the trumped up
charges he faced in Edinburgh. My friend's family reads
Hi Mark,
Thanks for solving my mystery. I am very pleased to have the facts.
Your friends at Castlecraig nearly had unexpected visitors last summer ! I
would have gone into the farm to enquire, except for the foot and mouth.
We drove all around the Black Isle, but I regret that we didn't notice the
castle ruin from the road opposite Evanton/Alness. Perhaps it is right on
the coast and not very obvious unless you are actually looking for it.
I was surprised how tiny the places on the Black Isle are (exce

Congrats Jennifer! A very worthwhile project! For Ross and Cromarty there
was published some years back an index to the 1841 census (Margaret

I am trying to locate the family of my great grandmother Margaret Cameron,
daughter of Murdoch Cameron, born 1828 in Pollewe. She came to Australia in
1848/9 I believe. I understand Pollewe to be in Ross-Shire.
I am also trying to locate a place called Oxlemains which I think is also in
Scotland.
Any information would be gratefully received.
I am in Victoria, Australia and would be happy to help locating people who
arrived here after 1836

Hi Shirley,
I have an ancestor Fanny Ross (but in some records Henny or Harriet Ross)
who married John Matheson at Kilmuir Easter 20.2.1793. Their children were
Hugh 1794, Ann 1795, John 1796 and 1798, Christian 1800, William 1804,
Donald 1806 and Alexander 1809.,
It looks as though Fanny could be a sister of your Walter Ross who married
in 1796.
Do you have a record of Walter's siblings ?
Do you know his parents ?

Hi Wendy
Thanks for your note. Your family names seem very close to my own, so there
may be relationships. I wonder if you could give me the dates and places for
your Donald Urquhart m Ann McDonald and for William Urquhart m Mary Munro ?
Do you have some reson to think that William may have married twice ?
Records for my first Scots in Australia were from immigrant records, which
also gave their parent's names. Most of this checked out on the IGI or Scots
Origins, which also produced records of siblings.
Seeking FRANK and DONALD SINGBEIL of Nanaimo, Vancouver.
Parents: CLARA (MUNRO) and WILLIAM SINGBEIL; last known at 660 Begbie Street,
Nanaimo B.C.
CLARA MUNRO was the daughter of ROBERT MUNRO, the youngest son of ANDREW
MUNRO of FEARN in Easter Ross.
If anyone is reading this from the Vancouver area, please open your Telephone
Directory and look up the name SINGBEIL (Frank or Robert).
Thank you,

Does anyone out there know how many schools operated in Stornoway from

Hello Marleen,
Thanks for the information. I will check out your website and access "The
Highlanders". I have found that the University of NSW has a copy. I am sure
my Christian Matheson has Lochalsh connections.
I am relieved that you don't think 50 miles is much of a barrier to weddings
and christenings in the Highlands. It will probably open up some research
possibilities for me. Perhaps I have been too much influenced by researching
my ancestral families in Westmorland and Cumberland. My observations
