Interesting. I would suspect that this individual would be related somehow to Capt. Gideon Shepard Sackett (1792-1860, Weygant 1240). --------------------------------- Ted Smith tcsmith@surewest.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thurmon King" To: Sent: Tuesday, August 04, 2009 9:54 AM Subject: Re: [SACKETT] Hazards of posting from online sources/ DorotheaSackettObituary > Hello Sackett Searchers, > > Concerning the obituary posted by Cindy; we have

6. Re: [SACKETT] SACKETT Digest, Vol 4, Issue 106 [1]
Thurmon, For what it is worth, I have limited information on the Augustus Sacket who founded Sackets Harbor, NY located not too far north of Altmar, NY. I will try to scan and send the map and information I picked up when I visited there in 2007. The following is from the brochure Sackets Harbor: Harbor of Destiny printed by the Sackets Harbor Visitor Center. "Augustus Sacket, a New York City lawyer and entrepreneur. Sacket purchased a large tract of land in the northern reaches of New York state'

8-4-2009 Nice sleuthing, Thurmon! My first post about the 1861 Canada census, I saw an abbreviation that looked like "N.S." to me, so I assumed it stood for Nova Scotia. Evidently, that column typically has the abbreviations "U.C." for Upper Canada and "L.C." for Lower Canada. Since Ontario was considered to be Upper Canada, the abbreviation on the microfilm is probably "U.C." On a related geographical note, Wolfe Island is located in Lake Ontario at the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River. (It is part of

Thurmon, Thank you, just like some death records the names are not spelled correctly so I was going with what was in the record, family members go by what they remember, even if it is wrong, it is pretty still pretty amazing. I printed Joel B and Lena (Coble) Sackett's death certificates and Mercy P. (Sackett) High's, would you like a copy? Next time I am in Marcellus I will take a picture of Samuel's grave, so that we have the correct information, sometimes the dates do not show up so well but a full

Kari, In the database he is William Post Sackett (I30917), son of James Horton Sackett and Jerusha Post. He married Margarette/Margret Elizabeth Garner, daughter of Henry Garner born 1800 in England; d. 1884 in Philadelphia. These are ancestors of our newest TSFA member Terri Seeba-Cariello. The last mention of William's wife is in a New York Times article dated December 8, 1854; pg 4, col. 4 DEFALCATION IN THE MARKET BANK Yesterday morning the principal officers of the Market Bank, in Pearl street,

Ok, does this help? In one the New York Times articles about the embezzlement case against William Post Sackett it says: "Meanwhile, SACKETT was allowed to go on his parole, and finally proceeded to the farm-house of his father-in-law, at Smithtown, near Suffolk, L. I. ..." In 1850 the Henry Garner with the wife, Julia was enumerated in Brooklyn, New York 1850 Census; 3rd Ward, city of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York Page No. (not on page); 19 July, 1850 70/83 Henry Garner, 50, M, Umbrella Maker, Englan

13. [SACKETT] Margaret Elizabeth Garner's mother [1]
Weygant has the parents of Margarette/Margaret Elizabeth Garner (b. Abt 1832) as Henry Garner and Elizabeth Scott Maken. Margaret E. Garner was the wife of W#2341-William Post Sackett. However, all the census information I find; 1850, 1860, 1880 has Henry Garner's wife as Julia Ann Garner, b. Abt 1818 in Pennsylvania. Julia Ann Garner's death certificate gives the names of her parents as Adam Siblay born in PA and Mary McMacken born in Ireland. Can anyone find information which will show whether Marg

Sandy, That is W#12971-Samuel B. Sackett, son of Dr. David Filer Sackett and Martha Milliken. He is I3860 in the Sackett database. His wife was Lucinda Frances Preston (1816-1882) The death record will help with some conflicting information I have from other sources. The DAR has his death as Apr. 1899 (DAR #161609). A cemetery transcription has his death year as 1898. http://www.interment.net/data/us/mi/cass/bly/bly%5Fs.htm Bly Cemetery, Marcellus, Cass County, Michigan Sackett, Samuel, b. 1810, d. 18

16. Re: [SACKETT] 1861 Canadian Census entry for Shepard Sackett [1]
Although the Canadian census gives the birthplace of Ezekiel and Hannah as NS; I would be more inclined to accept what Hannah reported as their birthplace in the 1880 census. If the NY birthplace is correct; Ezekiel could be W #1244-Ezekiel Sackett, son of Menardus and Fanny Nimocks Sacket. Menardus had sons: 1. W #1536-Capt. Gideon Shepard Sacket (father of Gen. Delos Bennett Sacket] 2. W #1241-George Sacket who had sons: Porter M.; George Augustus [had a son Porter W.]; Charles E.; and Gideon Shepard

Yes, some of the spelling is a bit wild. However, when we take into consideration the fact that often the one doing the writing was spelling the name the way they heard the name spoken by the one giving the information. And the handwriting often proves to be difficult to decipher. For an example from the death certificate for Samuel: I read the name of his mother as "Mortha Milikan" and I noticed that the website has David indexed as David AND as Daniel. It helps make research interesting. Thurmon
