In reply to the re-enactors that have a problem with accepting the members of
the SAR wearing period clothing that doesn't meet with their approval. Below
is a statement of one SAR who is a member of the color guard. His uniform is
ALMOST up to their requirements but participates right along side the
polyester. To many compatriots, polyester is too costly.
Re-enactors are supposed to be teachers of history that try to show how our
ancestors lived. Too bad they did not learn that manners and etiquette

Hi All, In addition there was a regiment of free black men from Massachusetts called the Bucks of America, It had black officers and men probably about 500 in total, the unit received its colors from Governor John Hancock and General George Washington and the units colors are on display in Boston at the Massachusetts Historical Society.

Very good Brother Aston - except lets replace the "Gay and Lesbian
History" with something else, maybe Pervert History. They don't need
lessons in that sort of thing as they will learn all too soon.
I fear that so called diversity and multi-culturalism will split us
apart. We need more togetherness augmented by such legislation as
English for our official language. Lets get it passed!

I'm not sure there's a definitive answer to this question. It likely varies
by state & chapter depending upon the situation. Our Indiana Society Color
Guard is self sufficient. Funds are kept in a separate account and used for
acquiring and maintaining color guard equipment. We do not spend more money
than what the color guard brings in. If a society or chapter is in a
position to financially support their color guard, then it might be
advantageous to keep the money in the general fund.

My opinion is that 5,000 is way too low, particularily in light of the RI
and MA regiments.
As I recall RI had three Continental line regiments, all integrated. A RI
Company stormed the redoubt at Yorkton to win the battle. What was its
racial makeup?
Also, slave owners could send a slave to serve in lieu of the slave owner.
But who's name appears on the rolls? The slave's or the slave owner's?

The impending increase in the cost for a DAR "Record Copy" to $10. places an
additional burden upon our applicants. Is a record copy really necessary in
every instance a DAR membership is cited? A copy of an approved DAR
application can often be obtained from the state or local DAR Chapter at
little or no charge. The past two years DAR National has been furnishing a
duplicate copy of the "Record Copy" to the local chapter upon approval.
Prior to this only the Record Copy at National co

We have a burial of a Robert Montgomery in Wells Co, Indiana but the age does not
fit he would have been in 1770 by the stone but by the end of the war he'd only be

The 1850 census in Wells Co,IN does have a Robert Marshall that appears to be the right age for the REV WAR over in Lancaster Township.

Hi All, There is one good site for uniforms http://www.walika.com/sr/uniforms/uindex.htm. It shows many of the styles and configurations. I don't believe that it can be attached to the SAR site without permission and I have not had good luck working with them. Ralph, you can try maybe you will have better luck.

Mr. Ambrose should remember that Washington, Jefferson, and Roosevelt were Americans
who were willing to martyr themselves for the public good. They wanted principles of
liberty, justice, freedom, and reason to live although they might die in furtherance
of the same. Such were the heroes at Normandy beach during WW II, also. To that end,
they represent the highest of ethical, altruistic, and patriotic behavior. Others
seek to destroy the principles for which they stood. They are the destroyers of all
humanity

Al,
You are right -- they were generally referred to in the Revolutionary War
era as "blacks" or (the hispanic version) "nigers." By the mid-19th
century, there had been so much inter-racial breeding that there were a
greater variety of designations. The 1850 Census recognizes "blacks" and
"mulattoes." In general use were the terms "negro" and "colored" as well as
quantitative variations: quadrons, octaroons, etc. During the War Between
the States, the official federal decision was to use the term "col
