I bought an HP Scanjet 5470c last week. It is great on all the functions and
it comes with great software.
I have scanned and printed old snapshots, new color photos, 30 year old
slides, and one negative, and the results as "doctored" by the software and
printed out by the new printer (also one week old - an HP Deskjet 990cse)
are excellent.

Hi Jo and all
Glad to hear you like the 650, I recently got one from uBid for $54. I
haven't used it much; but, I like the Z-lid for doing books.

Surely the safest way is to keep the picture is to keep the digital image.
The when, in twenty years time, the printers are better than ever, we can
print them out again with no degredation at all.

Martha,
You didn't say how you planned to use the camera - close to a computer for
transfer of huge images or away from the computer for days/weeks at a time.
A smaller model with a zoom lens and extra memory cards might be a better
value than a heavier camera that takes a lot of space for each high quality
image. When a 900 kb JPG can be printed as a six foot poster from a 2.1
megapixel, 3+ is mostly "advertising."
I'm using a camera with several memory cards up to 128 mb and it also takes
short videos. S
I haven't gotten a message from this list for over a month now...so thought I would pose a question to see if I would receive an answer. I do need help with this decision.
I'm getting a digital camera for Christmas (hooray). I've been looking and cannot make up my mind about a brand. I know I want at least a 3. megapixal. Your help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Martha
Hi, I just got myself a digital camera. I ended up getting a Fuji FinePix
6900 which is a 3 megapixel that produces 6 megapixel camera. It is overkill
but I am also using it for my school's yearbook which needs 300 dpi image
files so it should be good for that. I haven't tested it out on much yet
(since I have had it for 3 days) but the pictures are beautiful.
Bye for now

Hi Martha,
Congratulations! I think you'll find many uses for a digital cam
Hi, Your scanner should have come with a software program like Omni pro
or text bridge. These programs will scan text and leave them in their
original format. Kathy

There are a lot of cameras out there today that will fit your needs. I
have a Nikon coolpix 995 which is very similar in features to my 35mm
Nikon. It has the 3.3 mega pixel and a 4x optical. Just saw a Sony that
has 6 mega pixel and I think a couple of others as well. Depends on how
much you want to fork over. Kathy
Can someone tell me the address of the Scanners-Photos Archives?

Thank you all so much for the camera information and the internet sites you
suggested. It really helped me make up my mind. Found a Canon S30 that I
really like. Reviews were very good and the camera feels so good in my
hands. There's so much to learn and it will probably be after Christmas
before I can get through the manual and practice a bit. Will let you all
know how it performs.
Thanks again!! Glad the list is active again. Martha

Plenty of resolution for most purposes - few printers out there will meet that 1200 dpi (which is, I'm told, photo print quality), much less the 1600. I believe the Lexmark printer will, and at a pretty reasonable price the last time I looked.
Even the pro grade digitals - at $6,000+ - aren't yet good enough for that digital zoom to be of real value. All it does is select a smaller part of the total picture and blow it up to occupy the full chip - usually with some loss of picture quality. The new pro came

There are a few questions here. If the page has text and photos you will
need to set the "scan to" setting for image and text, and then save it as a
.rtf file.
I usually don't

Another Rootsweb archive search method that might be easier to use when

A very good resource is at: http://www.dpreview.com/
I have had a Casio QV2000ux for almost 2 years. It is only a 2.1 Mega pixel
and can be used as a point and shoot or with manual control. Good pictures

Hello all.
I am considering upgrading from my now rather old HP scanjet 4C scanner.
I am looking again at HP and am torn between the 7400c and the 5470c.
Does anyone on the list have any observations about the pros and cons of
these two devices please?
Regards.

Optical resolution is 1200 x 2400 dpi with 48 bit colour depth, and the only
connection is the USB lead (supplied) the software includes a new version of
their twain driver Scangear CS-U 6.2, Toolbox 3.0 and Photoshop Elements.

Interesting. I've been browsing the Canon site and - just after reading your message - I was reading about Canon's new digitizing system. In it they mentioned a period of 25 years for photos and for the color in photos printed on a bubblejet printer. That's a fairly good term, but regular photos will probably hold up a bit longer.
I'd guess - and it is a guess - that inkjet printers are similar. I've never used a color laser, but owned two laser printers in the past. They have a problem with plastics - the
Just nmy two cents, I have a N1240U and really like it. Had the 1220 first
and really like it for it's size and portability. It held up well but I try
to be carefully and not throw my stuff around. So I can't say how sturdy
they are when dropped, etc, probably in the same catagory as the laptop!
Sold my 1220 because I wanted some of the new features which come on the
1240. Kathy
Thank you for the extra information. I haven't had a scanner before, and
saw this as a 'starter' scanner. I have been 'on' this list a short time
and have been a 'lurker' trying to gather some intelligence about scanners
and digi cameras.
The comment that these Canoscans are a good 'travel' size assures that even
when I upgrade to another, this one will probably partner with my laptop
and ride along.
Good list - thanks everyone.
Best wishes for the New Year as well.

I just heard that pictures printed with a printer do not last as long as
those printed conventionally... a consideration if you are printing for
posterity.
So... is this true? The technology hasn't been around long enough for me to
know!
