Hi,
Anybody have more insight into the tribe in Colleton Co?
>The main question is, was there a Lumbee
>Tribe in Colleton Co.? Or were they from around York Co?
The only Lumbee tribe I know of is in the Lumberton/Laurenburg area of
North Carolina. The Catawba tribe is in York Co. and the Creels are in
Colleton County - although they are not a recognized tribe by the US Gov't.
The Creels live in an area between Round O and Canadys (at Hwy 61) close
to the Edisto River and the Dorchester Co. line.
Jane,
Please check for any ministers with the surname of WEEKS, HUTTO. Believe
they would have been in the Orangeburg, Colleton, Dorchester areas.
Thanks,
Linda

She is sorting through the papers and these are some of the names she has
found. She will be forwarding new names to me as she goes through the
papers.

Hi,
I checked out(until 4/4) two books from the library,
Early Methodism in the Carolinas (1897 reprint 1967)
(no index - but some alphabetical index of ministers)
and
History of South Carolina Methodism (1952)
(index and some alphabetical lists)
I can do lookups for ministers - please limit your request to 2 names
(locations might help) until I see how much response I get.
Thanks,
Jane

Hi List,
Is there any written history about the Braxton/Broxton Plantation in Colleton? My 4th great grandparents were John Braxton born October 16, 1734 in Md and died May 20, 1791, and Anna Maria (Mary) Varn born in Germany in December 16, 1733 and died in Colleton in 1807. Is there a chance they could have been the owners at some point?
Also in what portion of Colleton County is the Braxton Cemetery located. John & Mary are buried there and naturally I will want photos of this too. My husband and I ar

Since we are on Methodist History, I have a question. I understand the
Lumbee Indian Tribe most always were Methodist. I have found also that 80%
of my Bass/Jackson family are Methodist. Many in my Bass family established
Methodist Churches in Georgia. The main question is, was there a Lumbee
Tribe in Colleton Co.? Or were they from around York Co?
I hope my question is not to far out in left field. It seems all of this
came together for me at one time.

Hi. Found my cousin on the 1900 census for Colleton County. His property
is identified as #292 of farm schedule. Does anybody know a way to
cross-reference this to an actual farm schedule? I'd like to find out where
his property was, as this was the first place to welcome my gr-grandfather
when he immigrated in 1865. They called it "Tomotley" or Dawn-of-Hope
plantation. My grandfather used to go hunting down there in the early
1900's. Thanks, Maria
Someone on this list had earlier published an address for the SC Historical
Society in Walterboro. I have accidentally erased that info, could you
kindly repost? Thanks, Maria
Surprised to see your name as I had a cousin way, way back named Maria
Phenix. She was a sister of my third great grandmother they lived in
Edgefield Co SC. Just a coincidence. I do have the Middleteon family in
Colleton Co SC. Best luck, Luanne Spence Taylor
