1. [ARGYLL] Clan info request, [1]
My Wilkie (McQuilkan) family came to Canada from Skipness, Argyllshire. According to a Clan's map of Scotland, Skipness was Campbell country. Does this mean the Campbells were Royalty representives ie were they the landlords.Yes I'm confused so a brief explanation would be appreciated. Also searching the Cairns name from Argyllshire Thankyou Barrie at bwilkie@dunmac.com Nova Scotia Canada

4. [ARGYLL] MacSporran and Purcell Surnames [1]
Another surname change of interest was the name MacSporran which was anglicized to Purcell or Pursell. The Purcells were the keepers of the purse for the McDonald clan. I understand that MacSporran means "son of the purse bearer" (correct me if I am wrong) so you can see the connection between the surnames MacSporran and Purcell. I am very interested in this surname connection so would appreciate hearing from anyone with similar interests. Doug Purcell Eufaula, Alabama

Is anyone working on their McIntyre families who were from Kilninver Parish? I have one family group with scant information besides my primary line. 8. [ARGYLL] Glasgow street names [1]
Hi listers, I have just come across this great site which some of you might find helpful http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/info-gstreets3.html It lists most of the old street names and cites the origin of the name. For example, Goosedubbs (which was recently "on the list" got its name from the fact that the Provost's geese grazed there, not (as I thought) from being the place where poultry was killed and plucked. 9. [ARGYLL] McLACHLAN [1]
Hi List Have been continuing to tie myself in knots with my McLACHLANS and their connections and generally lurking. A query .. There is a grave with a headstone in Keil cemetery at Lochaline with a simple inscription in gaelic. It is for the Bard, Iain McLachlainn 1804-1874. Is this the Dr John McLACHLAN of Rahoy, son of Robert McLACHLAN of Rahoy, and brother-in-law of John SINCLAIR of Lochaline? Anne MAYE in chilly Armidale NSW OZ.

11. [ARGYLL] FAO Karen Dickerson re Smith Family [1]
Message posted to list; e-mail address of Karen Dickerson not working Karen Not sure I can help further with this [links to John SMITH, Campbeltown, 18th century]. I've never found a death record or gravestone for Malcolm Smith, and so have not been able to identify his parents with any confidence. The records of the Duke of Argyll's tenants in Kintyre in 1792 list the following family, and he might be this son of Duncan Smith and Mary Kelly - but no real proof. Knockhantybeg Duncan Smith 48 Mary Kelly

Marion and Sarah are the same name in older Highland records. The Gaelic name Mor was anglicised first as Marion, then almost without exception it was decided that Sarah was the English equivalent. The same person will be found in records by both names. George Sanborn Donna Lou Ritter wrote: > I have several times come across places where mother and daughter names seem > to be interchanged. Although I do not disagree with Les Horn's comments on Baker, I would wonder where he got the idea that 'baxter' was a female baker. It is well attested as the normal Scots word for 'baker' from the 15th to the 19th century, during which it was gradually replaced in general usage by the English form. Frank Bigwood
19. [ARGYLL] Donald McGilvray Inverary [1]
Hello All, Could some one please help with the location of a Glenshira or Glamshira, Inverary. I'm not sure whether this is a farm or maybe a small village. I'm looking for any information available on a Donald McGilvray who is recorded as living there in 1898. Harold C Buckmaster was general manager of the British Aluminium Company and Loch Leven Water and Electric Power Company from early 1908 until mid-1910. His wife's maiden surname is believed to have been Macdonald. At that time they had at least one son - Harold (Harry) Ronald. Can any one on this list say anything of the parentage of Harold C Buckmaster, his wife or their descendants? Donald Maclean.

Thanks to all of you who replied. Doesn't make much sense to me, but translating from Gaelic to English probably doesn't. I'm assuming the same is true for the names Daniel & Donald. I have many that seem to slide from one to the other throughout their lives. D. Lou Ritter ----- Original Message ----- From: "George F.
