Hello,
I am looking for an address for Joseph HARDIE in the 1841 census. Joseph
was the founder of David Sands Pty Ltd. He left the business to his
nephew David Sand upon his death in 1845.

Hi John
Many thanks again for the information you managed to uncover for me.
Since we last communicated, I have come to the conclusion that even
"documentary"
evidence should be treated with caution. I have a copy of an 1850

Hallo, I am new to the list.
My great grandfather, James Burns Brown, has his occupation as writer on his
1859 marriage cert, at the age of 20. I looked this term up in a glossary
and found it means lawyer or solicitor.
Please can anyone tell me what training would have been required to be a
writer. What sort of legal work would he have been able to do? Would his
name be on any Edinburgh law list or similar?
Christine
Hi,
I can not find the baptism of my GGGrandfather. His name was Duncan Gow and
according to family sources (Birthday book ) he was born 25 November 1835
Edinburgh.
On his marriage cert in 1860 he listed his Father as Duncan Gow deceased and
his Mother as Jane Robertson (ms)
In the 1841 census he was 5 living with Duncan 35 a tailor journeyman, not
born in Edin, Jane 30 and Elizabeth 2
In 1851 he was 14 a tailor apprentice and was living with a Christopher
Morris 51 a tailor Journeyman born in Wales, Jane 3
Yes, I am - a small portion of it, that is!

All Writers to the Signet are solicitors and can put the letters WS after
their names, but not all solicitors are Writers. "The original writers were
clerks in the office of the Secretary, who kept the signet, which in time
became the seal under which the various writs of diligence were issued:
hence by late 16th century they were solicitors operating procedure before
Court of Session." - Source - A Dictionary of Scottish History by Gordon

Hello John
Many thanks for the detailed and valuable information you have managed to
dig out! It proves at least one thing, and that is, my g.g.grandfather was
prone to "bending" the truth. ;-)) I have his application for citizenship
dated Nov.1850, which says he was a subject of Prussia, aged 46, the father
of two sons, and had lived in London for 13 years! Yet on the 1851 census,
he gives his age as 33? Just goes to show---you can't believe *everything*
in the record books!! One more thing John. Was he th
thats 2 addresses in the lower reaches of Bruntsfield Place in the last few
days. The buildings which match these numbers today are late Victorian
tenements so I am wondering if anyone knows when the flats were built and if
the street was renumbered.
I suspect Colin Darby's ancestors and possibly these people lived in the
larger houses which face Bruntsfield Links.

Hi! Does anyone on the list have access to 1814 trade directory please for
Edinburgh / Leith area?
I am looking for a Thomas Fletcher - rope and sail maker.
Sometime between 1818 and 1820 Thomas moved his growing family to Wick,
Caithness. I have not located him on any trade directories for Wick.
But would appreciate if anyone does have access to trade directories for
Midlothian area if they could check for Thomas Fletcher for me please.
Thomas was born about 1794 believed to be in Leith. His first th
No. Greenhill was the name of a house, a nice big one, set in substantial

The Edinburgh Water Company was instituted in 1819 and in 1854 its head
office address was 123 Princes St.and Alex Ramsay was still manager. There
were also 6 district offices including the one in Leith. (Info from Oliver &
Boyds Almanac.)
Alex Ramsay had the same post in 1864 but in 1869 there was an Edinburgh and
District Waterworks Act. This seems to have set up a Trust to run things,
and in 1874 Ramsay is not listed.
But at least you can be fairly certain that he was around long enough to

Wonder if anyone has access to either 1861 or 1871 census for Cramond area?
I am looking for the Elder family ..
John Elder, Helen Elder, and several daughters. Know they were in Cramond
for 1851 census, and Helen and some of the daughters appear in Abercorn for
1881 census..interested to know what entries were made inbetween. There
were also tow other Elder families in the area at the same time, and any
reference to them would also be appreciated as I try to tie them together.
Many thanks,

My GGG Grandfather was married in Edinburgh and is a Scott, from where I do not know as the records have stopped.
He was an ADAM.
I have no connection with Scotland, neither has any member of my family since 1848, when they moved south through Newcastle, the South Coast and the Midlands.
I appreciate every body wants to be a Scot and will use there name as some sort of connection, however slim, to get a kilt when on holiday in Scotland.
I want to know if I have any claim of being a Scot by blood line or hav

Hello to everyone interested in these rather lovely houses from the early
19thC. These are the ones we think were renumbered when the flats further
down were built.
I noticed this evening that an upper flat in one of them is currently for
sale via Brodies the solicitors. This will be a conversion so that the lower
storey is entered by the front door and the upper level by a side entrance
built later on - that would be a typical arrangement. Go to

Apologies Andrew I pushed the wrong button !!!
The building , on the north side of Waterloo Place at east end of Princes
Street, which housed the Waterloo Hotel still stands but now occupied by one
of the City of Edinburgh Council Departments.
It became "Darling's Regent Hotel" in the late 19th early 20th C finally
closing its doors in the 1970's.
Apologies for my error.

Hello,
I am looking for information on James KILGOUR and
