Do you have any more details on David Caddon as I cant find him on
the CWGC site.
Year of death or regiment would help a lot.
Sounds like she attended one of the Episcopalian churches, which
would make sense if she was C of E originally. I dont think the
Presbyterians do confirmation (could be wrong) as they dont have
bishops to carry it out.
I don't think catholics have 'rectors'.

Would that have been a shipwright, or wheelwright?
Any connections to the family? I cannot find any other children born to this couple.

Hi Liz,
I have a lot of YOUNGs (my grandfather's family) from in and around
Edinburgh, Borders, and Fife. Among them is a David YOUNG, but not
exactly from Edinburgh (rather, Haddington) and I do not know anything
about his wife or children. Here is his lineage though, in case it is
any help. Of course, I'd be glad to hear from you if by chance there is
a match.

I am intrigued by this as I believe my 3g grandfather James MITCHELL
lived in the same street at some point. I am just wondering how Irene
found your John Nisbet's death as I have tried everything I can think
of to find the death of James MITCHELL and wonder if there is an
angle I have missed. One MI index to try by the way would be the Dean
Cemetery which is fairly close and I think has an index of some sort.
Although of course proximity is no real guide - you should also look

Dear Ro(d)ger,
Not sure which list you are on so I'm sending this to both as your server

Hi Liz,
The good news is that their marriage, in Glasgow(!), is on Scotland's
People. If you get that info., it should give you the names of their
parents.
I had a look for Janet in 1881 but she seems to have been born after the
census, also apparently in Glasgow (see SP again), which was at the
beginning of April (not that I found her parents either). I also had a look
on IGI, and I see that all three daughters have surnames as middle names.
These are very likely their grandmothers' & great-grandmothers'
In early September I shall be bringing 2 American Cousins to Edinburgh on a Genealogy Tour.
Our interests are
JOHN DEWAR and JANET ROSS, Married 1827 in Culross and lived most of their lives in Low Valleyfield. John was a local lad, son of JAMES DEWAR AND CATHERINE NICOL whilst Janet Ross came from Liberton, Midlothian, the daughter of DAVID ROSS and JANET STEVENSON
I am particularly interested in MAY DEWAR daughter of John and Janet. She married BLAMIER TOPPING and they emigrated to Virginia about 1870.

After many years of research, I am still on the trail of my elusive great grandmother ISABELLA RUTHERFORD, born about 1846 Edinburgh or Paisley.
I think I may have a break-through and would like the advice of people on the list to see if I am on the right track, at last.
My husband and I have just returned from a few days in the Scottish Borders. He drove me to every village where there was an Isabella Rutherford living in 1861. I have now discounted these, as they were either still living there in 1871 (
Hi Meg
Thanks for posting these , even tho none of them is mine :-(
About the abbreviations, I think OCP probably stands for Old Church Parish
(written in full for the Anderson baptism on 23rd March). DO you think H S
is actually M S (maiden surname?) I have done some transcribing of early
records and the H and M could be quite confusing.

Well I think this may take a bit of unravelling. I only have the
Ancestry index for 1841 and that shows an Alexander aged 5, not 5
months and another sibling aged 4. Obviously the original/image needs
to be checked here but on the face of it this Alexander was born
1836. Age is more likely to be correct when shown at a young age in
the birth family than in say a marriage record where he might either
not know his exact age or want for some reason to adjust things a
little.

Sheena - delighted be able to ask about a HALCRO man who disappeared
into the population of Edinburgh after he went from the Orkney Islands
to the US, then to Edinburgh the 1920s. James HALCRO or HALCROW died
1948 in Morningside. Have absolutely no idea what he did while he lived
in Edinburgh but he never married and the family pretty much forgot
him. Am trying to correct that situation. Might he be in the directory
??? There should be a rare few HALCROs to wade through. Many thanks -

Hi listers,
Please may I introduce myself and my genealogical interests to you,
and ask a first question?
I am researching my gt.grandfather James Speed who was a glass maker,
living in the Greenside / Glenorchy area below Calton Hill for a few
years around 1860. He later lived in England, and worked for the
Japanese government near modern Tokyo where he helped birth western-
style glassmaking in Japan at a time when Japan was just awakening to
the world beyond its shores.

I have a fiche from Dean Cemetery. Unfortunately it is not indexed
and difficult to search,
but I will have a look if you can give me an idea of dates. I do not
believe it would contain
any modern info.
