This is the problem with OPRs. And your folk had emigrated before the 1841 census here. I would be inclined to calculate the birth of your Edward who married Anne as about 1785 or thereabouts. Similarly for your Anne Drummond.
Have you tried to locate a death record for him in Canada, and a monument inscription.
You would be in luck if they brought out either of their parents to Canada as I know some families did.

The subject may be misleading, but this is genealogy related. I came
across reference to this book "The Edinburgh Cabinet and Chair-makers'
Books of Prices 1805-1825" and wondered if anyone has access to it. My
ancestor, John Nisbet of Edinburgh (about 1800- about 1841) is listed as
a cabinetmaker in various documents I have and wondered if there is
mention of him or any other Nisbets in this book. I would appreciate if
someone could look and see what might be found.
Thanks,

I found a Hugh MAY, shoemaker in the 1841 census. I mention this
because I have a relative Elizabeth KAY who appears in the 1881
census index as MAY even though the original is quite clear.
This Hugh was born 1811 but also has a son Hugh (1840) so if my hunch
is right could be a relative.

Hi Vern,
In the days before scotlandspeople and Ancestry.com were available (to
provide
information but also turning precious sharing of free information into a
multi million # $ business!) it was possible to look through the census
records at local libraries, record offices and family history centres.
Presumably it still is and in a very satisfying way.
Now you have identified the page you can find it on the filmed original
pages (or ask someone to find it) and print it off for the price of a

My 6x Gt. Grandfather, Alexander Gordon was a Writer in Edinburgh at the
time of his daughter Elizabeth's marriage to Rev John Nairne in 1749 in
his parish (Anstruther Easter).
I believe there may have been a difference between a Writer and a WS.
In the "History of the Society of Writers to his Majesty's Signet" an
Alexander Gordon of Cairnfield is recorded as a WS , elected 1723, born
Nov 17 1687, the son of Robert Gordan of Lunan. This man married 1)

Found some pics of Mid Arthur Place, you just have to put it into
google. Also, from other hits this area had quite a few people in the
book publishing trades - you could say then that it was an artisan
area at the time although clearly the housing stock had suffered
badly by 1959.
Would be interested to know if your John was in a similar trade as
that would be another point in favour of this being the right family.

Yes, then as now, the WS lawyers were an elite. There were for

Hello!
I am new to this list. I have been researching my 3rd Gt-grandparents, Edward MCGIE (b. 1781) and his wife Ann DRUMMOND (b. 1785) who were both born at Kilmarnock according to their marriage record. They were married 15 May, 1808 at Old Church Parish in Edinburgh. Two of their children Daniel born in 1809 and Mary (my 2nd gt-grandmother) born 1811 were baptized in Old Church Parish also. A younger son Edward was born in 1817, also in Edinburgh. Edward McGie, Sr. was a Merchant according to the chur

You'll not find anything online covering the dates you gave cos all Scottish records are covered by a law that doesn't allow public access to them if there's a chance that the person/people might still be alive.
the only way of getting info is to go to Register House in Edinburgh
Do you have any relatives living in Edinburgh. Might be worth your while asking them to visit Register House for you and paying the #17 to look at the records/

There is a copy in the National Library of Scotland. It appears to be
a new compilation published in 2000, so you might be able to get a
copy from the publishers or even the author. You might ask the
library for photocopies of relevant bits, subject to the appropriate
copying rules.

I'll make a start, dont know how much you dont know. ;-) I think its a good tip to bear in mind that formal registration didnt take place until 1855. However, if you were to find a birth in that year, the birth certificate will give you a lot of information to confirm the earlier records you might have. Numbers of children born and died, the parents.
I've found death certificates also to be a mine of information which can blow apart a line of children as to the identities of their parents. I calcula

Hi,
I am currently searching very slowly through Scotlands People for my
William BLACK, and I was wondering whether anyone could help me narrow
down the search a little.
William BLACK b ~1884 (Glasgow, but possibly Edinburgh). Mother is
Marion PIKE and he names his father as William BLACK, solicitor.
In my search there is no marriage for these two, but there is an
unmarried solicitor in Edinburgh who may fit the description.
Could someone do a births lookup for my William Black around 1884,

Hi Everyone
I joined Scortland's People and got the census image I needed. As Kelly
suggested, it didn't help.
But, I searched for Stenson Children between 1871 and 1880 and found the
birth of a daughter. From the birth record, I now know the wife's maiden
name (SMITH - oh joy!) and that they married Oct 5, 1864 on the Isle of
Jersey!

Good Morning
I am new to the list and hope you can help.
Robert Albert Maule Menzies was born at 3 Potterow in 1855 to parents Thomas
Menzies and Jane McKenzie.
He married Helen S Stoddart from Bridge of Allan,Stirling in Edinburgh 1878.
They had 4 children Helen 1879/80, Jane 1882/83,Thomas 1884/85 and Robert
1888/89.
He had his own business - Burgh Cabinet Works at Murano Place at least
1904-07 according to Edinburgh and Leith PO Directories. I believe he was
involved in the business of Robert Maule
Thank you Janet for responding! He died in Quebec City and his death record
states that he was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland...in 1785 as you suggested.
I know it is difficult to find records before census, etc., but just thought
perhaps someone on this list had some McGie's in their ancestry...or
Drummond's, of course.
Thanks Again,
Marian
