1. [EDB] Could you help a STRACHAN? [1]
Hi all Edinburgh Listers, I am looking for any advice, pointers or help on how I should go about tracking down any living relations of an ancestor.I am a descendant of an Alexander Strachan(my Grandfather)Born 4/3/1879 at 12 Forbes street Edinburgh son of John Strachan and Catherine Longmuir. Alexander was one of nine children however he died young of TB in 1913 and his wife Christina Forbes(my Grandmother)somehow managed to lose contact with all of the Strachan side.I would be ecstatic if you could put me
2. [EDB] 64 Canongate and 144 Coniston Road [0.985171]
Hello everyone, Further to Alan's listing regarding the above - I have a relative who died at 144 Coniston Road in 1924 but was unaware it was a poorhouse - until today (grin). Can Alan or anyone tell me anything about it and whether any records have been kept from it? I am guessing maybe at the Edinburgh City Chambers archives? Best wishes, Eileen in Hampshire
3. [EDB] Kirk Session Records [0.985171]
I am trying to find out if there are Kirk Session records for the parishes of Girthon, Kirkcudbright and Tongland in Kirkcudbrightshire and, if so, where they might be kept. They are not among those listed on the GROS website, but I read that most Kirk session records are at the National Archives of Scotland? Also, would someone please clarify if New Register House and General Register Office are one and the same. I will be coming to Edinburgh soon, and want to look at BMD. What other research facilities

Can anyone tell me if the name FARQUAR is pronounced FERCHER or similar in Scotland. I have a Farquar (Christian name) whose son was christened Fercher, and wondered if it was the same name spellled phonetically. 5. Re: [EDB] 64 Canongate and 144 Comiston Road [0.985171]
Queensberry House was (is?) at 64 Canongate. The whole area around has been demolished to make way for the new Scottish Parliament building. Hopefully Queensberry House still stands and perhaps has been incorporated into the building? At present, I cannot find any information on 144 Comiston Road. There are no entries for that number inthe directories I have looked at. Stuart. 6. Re: [EDB] McArthur [0.985171]
Hi Catherine While my McArthur ancestors were indeed in Edinburgh in 1906 I rather suspect your photograph is not my McArthurs as the date puts it between generations. However it would be interesting to have a copy as I am still working on all Edinburgh McArthurs in the period. If someone else claims the photograph I would like to be in touch with him/her. I already have family photos for the period- McArthur family 1896 with children, 1910 - grown-up and 1914 just before the war: 1916 my great grandm
7. [EDB] 64 Canongate and 144 Comiston Road [0.985171]
Can anyone tell me whether 64 Canongate was the address of Queensberry House? And whether the poorhouse at 144 Comiston Road in the 1920s was the same one as the poorhouse in Craiglockhart in the 1870s? Many thanks Alan Baillie
8. [EDB] Re: Craiglockhart Poorhouse ... [0.985171]
Hello Allan and Listers, Thanks for posting this site > http://www.axissolutions.co.uk/steilshistory.htm It was very interesting to read about Craiglockhart Poorhouse. I had no idea there had been a 'poorhoose' there! As a child, Glenlockhart Road was one of our 'haunts', we'd spend hours climbing Craiglockhart Hill on the right (walking from Colinton Road), the golfcourse was on the hill on the left. My grandfather spent the last year of his life at the 'Glenlockhart Old People's Home' ( as we called it) i

Hi Listers: Have a death certificate for Grace FIFE BELL who was born 1 March 1849 probably in Lochee, Scotland, even though the death certificate spells it "Lauhee" Scotland.???? Her parents were Alexander Fife, b. in Scotland, and Janet Stewart, also born in Scotland. She died in Watertown, Jefferson County, N. Y. 10 July 1940. 10. [EDB] Available OPR dates. [0.985171]
Hi List, Would it be useful to anybody to have the available dates for the OPR's in any particular parish? I have a list that gives all the dates of Birth / Christenings, Marriages & Death's for any particular parish in Scotland. These are the records which are held by the GRO in Edinburgh, so I don't know if the LDS records would cover the same dates etc. However, at least you would know if records exist in the time frame that your ancestors were in a particular parish. If this would be of use to you, le

15. [EDB] Barbara KINLOCH [0.985171]
Is anyone working on the KINLOCHs? I'm trying to find the parents of Barbara KINLOCH, spouse of Charles OLIPHANT, writer. Barbara was born about 1640. Charles was "of Langtoun," and all 14 of their children were born in Edinburgh Parish. Sir Francis KINLOCH, Lord Provost, Dean of Gild, etc. was a witness at the baptism of many of their children so I assume he is father, brother or uncle to Barbara, but I can't connect them. Any help greatly appreciated. Richard Robertson richrob4@home.com http://members.

Ian Russell of Ontario asked: > Does anyone here know what church Rev. Nahum > Levison was minister of in Edinburgh? I am related by marriage to the late Rev Fred Levison, second son of Sir Leon Levison (1881-1936). Sir Leon's father was Rabbi Nahum, a distinguished Jew, and Leon's brother was the Rev Nahum Levison who became a Church of Scotland minister and theological scholar. I believe the Rev Nahum Levison died in 1968. I never knew either Sir Leon Levison or the Rev Nahum Levison, but I have befo

24. [EDB] Re: Edinburgh Prison before 1873 [0.985171]
That would of course be the Calton Jail, which was demolished between the wars to make way for St Andrews House. Edinburgh Prison then moved to Saughton. (My grandfather started work at Calton just after the First World War, then went on to become Steward at Saughton Jail.) There is a list for those with prison interests: prisons-uk-l-request@rootsweb.com and you might find someone with the knowledge you need. The National Archives of Scotland also have fairly complete registers of prisoners in the C
