Hello Listers,
I'd be very grateful for your help.
Would you know if I need to specify a precise area of Greater Edinburgh in order to look up the 1851 Census?
My problem is that I believe the family (listed below) was living in the North Leith area, but I'm not sure exactly where. They may have lived in Bonnington, or Cockpen, or North Leith (judging from where some of the children were baptised).
Do you think that I need to know the exact place in order to look up the family?
The family is:
John T.
I'm hoping that there is SKS on the list who would be able to offer some advice and/or help on a problem that has been bugging me since the beginning of the year.
I am trying to locate the burial place of one William THOMAS, who died 13th. March 1947, aged 74. He was born at Northop in Flintshire, North Wales in 1872. He lived and worked at Bangor, Caernarfonshire for most of his life, and died in hospital at Caernarfon. I have searched all the churchyards/cemeteries in the places he had family connections

Not sure you have the documents for the births below. If you are interested in some, I have looked up the INDEX numbers
for af few of the events below. This will allow you to order the Certificate from the GRO or a Researcher for less.

Hi Roger,
Last year at FHC I copied some marriages in Edinburgh that took place August
19, 1770. One was:
"William Young Shoemaker in New Gray friars kirk parish and Eliz. Bowman?
Daughter to John Bowman? weaver in North Leith now in Tolbooth Kirk parish"
I don't know if it is any connection to your William, but there is alway
hope.
I also have William Youngs in my ancestry.
Wm. Young, b. 1789 in North Leith, m. Elizabeth Ferguson in 1819
Wm. Young, b. in North Leith, m. Catherine Anderson in 1786

Does anyone have access to an Edinburgh Post Office Directory for any of the
years 1814 to 1824 please?
I am researching an Alexander THOMSON, carver and gilder of Edinburgh.
Obviously this is a very common name. By using the keywords "carver" or
"gilder" to search the directory listings in Ancestry.com, I have found
records of an Alexander THOMSON at 79 High Street Edinburgh for each of the
years from 1814-1824, but the listings do not quote his occupation. The
fact that the keyword search is so

The 1851 Census record for your Frasers will clear up any confusion about
which Bonnington is involved.
The tiny hamlet of Bonnington near Ratho isn't on or near the Water of
Leith. Most people in Edinburgh won't have heard of it. There are just a
few buildings there.
Bonnington on the Water of Leith between Edinburgh and Leith is very much
bigger and better known and has been a focus for trade for centuries.

For more than 20 years, my father (and now I) have been trying to trace our Watt ancestors in Edinburgh in the period 1770 - 1835. After many pounds invested in research fees that have told us of many places that have no record of the family, I am desperately seeking some guidance.
Our family bible tells us that James Haldane WATT was the son of John WATT and Ann HUNTER and that in 1799 he was the first child baptised by James HALDANE, recently ordained pastor of the First Congregational Church in Scotland
That's great, Mags. Many thanks.
You don't happen to know if they have an email address do you?
Cheers,
Keith.

Many people can't remember where they were born.
Or someone else gives the info and makes assumptions or makes a mistake.
So don't discount the family story entirely, but also think laterally - it
may be true about your grandfather, or it may be true, but about someone
else eg HIS father or an uncle.

I'm looking for my ancestors William YOUNG and Janet MACPHERSON. They are
the parents listed on the death certificate of my gggGrandfather John YOUNG,
born in Edinburgh in 1815. William's occupation is given as boot & shoe
manufacturer. As a lad, John YOUNG helped in an uncle's shop in Galashiels,
but whether this was a YOUNG or MACPHERSON uncle by blood or marriage is not
clear. John's life as a gas engineer took him to Selkirk and Dalkeith, and
later further afield. But his Edinburgh origins remain a
Hi Sybil,
I'm pretty sure Bonnington would come under the umbrella of North Leith, but
Cockpen is way out of town to the south of Edinburgh. As the later children
were born/christerned in North Leith I would look there first on the 1851
Census.
Good luck.

I think I have found my elusive great grandfather, William Johnson ANDERSON. A while ago I requested a look up of his birth at Edinburgh. I have since searched the 1901 census for Sunderland & found him living at 4 Parade, Sunderland. (Address given on marriage cert in 1905) My mother always believed he was born in Edinburgh & moved to Sunderland aged 4. This must be a family myth! According to the 1901 census, he was born in Ryhope, Co Durham! Many thanks to all those people who are searching the in
My grandfather attended Geroge Hariots Hospital as a boarder in 1881. Was
listed on that years census. I am trying to find out how long he was there.
Does anybody know if records exist for boarders and how I can get
information concerning this? Thanks
Regards Elaine
Hi Sybil,
For your purposes, Bonnington means your first suggestion. In earlier times
it came under North Leith for bmd's etc.; latterly it was Edinburgh St
Andrew's.

Hi Listers:
I'm new to this site and would like to ask a question already. If I was to order in a film from my local FHC of LDS of the 1851 Scottish Census for Edinburgh what film would cover the Stockbridge area ? In other words, what Enumeration District is Stockbridge in ? I am looking for Robert Niven,
his wife Agnes Niven ( nee Reekie) and children Isabella, John, Robert, and possibly others. If anyone already has this information and would share it, I would be so very grateful.
Cheers from Canada,

Hello listers,
Is there anyone on list who could assist me in finding my ROBERTSON family in
the 1871 census? I'm trying to find my great grandparents William and
Isabella ROBERTSON (both will be about 37 years old), both born in Berwick on
Tweed. There should be at least three children living with them - Adam, about
12, Alexander, about 6, and William about 3, all born in Berwick onTweed. On
the 1881 census they were living at 6 Sunnybank Place, South Leith,
Edinburgh. (In 1861 they were living som
