I will be travelling to Edinburgh for a week in October, arriving
midday on the 15th. While preparing for my genealogical safari, I read
that the Scottish Genealogical Society has their monthly meeting on
Friday evening Oct. 15th, 7:30 p.m., at the National Library of
Scotland, with a guest speaker presenting genealogical resources to be
found there.
As I had planned to join the SGS while in Edinburgh, especially so that
I could use their reading room for Monumental Inscriptions while there,

Hi
My name is Robynne and I live in Toronto, CAnada. I am
somewhat desperate here in asking if some kind soul
could look up an OPR marriage record for me. The IGI
does not give me enough information.
I am looking for an OPR record of a Marriage dated 4
Feb 1856 at the Tolbooth Church in Edinburgh, between
Thomas Fairbairn (aka Freebairn) born 20 aug 1827 in
Fifeshire, and Elizabeth Simpson born (date unknown
but possibly 1823 or 1827/28)), whereabouts unknown
for sure but possibly South Ronaldsay, Orkney
I copied this out from the Register of the Society of Writers to Her

I saw he had sent someone else some WS details, but here goes anyway.

I don't have the 1841 census, but I was lucky enough to find my FRASERs on

lucked out and found my FRASERs #2 Drummond Street, St. Cuthburts, Edinburgh

constantly adding to it, so if you're not lucky this time, keep checking
back.

Hi Katherine,
I don't know too much about Helen Vair. I know she married her first
husband, James Turnbull, in 1783, and that the banns were read at
Edinburgh Parish. Her father is listed as "Alexander Vair". She must
have been born around 1763 and definitely before 1766, but I haven't
found any matching record. I think I'm going to go search for other
Vairs in the area born to an Alexander Vair father. That might provide
clues.
Anyway, Helen & James had at least three children, also baptised a
The 1860 NYC federal census shows CUNINGHAM SHEPHERD as a "seaman" born

Yes, John, on closer inspection it is indeed Quarryholes (not
Marryholes)! Alexander Ferrie/Ferry died in 1808 and his will must have
been written prior to 1802 as it does not mention by name his last
child, Thomas Brown Ferrie, who was born 1801-1802. I was confused
because the "Qu" looked a lot like an "M" (with a rather elaborate
upstroke) in handwriting from another will I had been reading. But here
it is definitely distinct from other capital "M's". There are no other
"Q's" in the will so I
I have a Thomas COLLINS, tailor who married Rosina MCINTOSH in 1868 in South
Shields.
Thomas was from Colnaugton CLK .
There appears to be a son, Thomas, born 1861 at Stirling according to the
1871 census 11 Pleasance St. Edinburgh, plus Ellen 1866 and Barbara 1869
both born Edinburgh.
I have been unable to find a birth for Thomas father or son. Would also be
interested in any entry on a trade index.
Rosina's brother Archibald used the name "Collins" as a second name for one
of his sons and it has continu
WHYTOCK & REID
Hope "Ken" in USA catches this. Apparently WHYTOCK & REID went into
liquidation last July. The remaining items from the business are to be sold
at auction next week, including the Royal Warrant obtained in 1838.
The sale will be held by auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull, and there will be
furniture, cloth etc. No mention of written archives in the article,
published in today's Herald & Post free newspaper.

Hello Listers
I have an ancestor Henrietta BONE who said on 4 censuses and at her Marriage
that she was born in Edinburgh circa 1814. She was married in December
1836 in Canongate when she said her father Robert BONE a Clerk late of High
Street was deceased.
There is no OPR IGI Baptism entry for Henrietta and I was unable to find her
in the Canongate Records film at the LDS.
There is a Robert BONE in the Edinburgh Apprenticeship Records. He was the
son of John a Leadwasher of Leadhills, Lanark and Ro
Hello Everyone,

I am now going through the will of my G5 grandfather, Alexander Ferrie,
solicitor. He appears to have accumulated quite a bit of property. I'm
interested to know where the following places are located. I will
include the relevant excerpts from the will.

Many thanks for that Jane. I'll have a go.

Hello everyone,
I am researching a West Australian woman who went to what she described as
'a huge Academy for Young Ladies' in Queen Street', Edinburgh in around
1885. She said that the school was 'large and prosperous with classes of a
hundred pupils each'. Can this be possible? She says it was run by a 'Dr
Pride'.
Does anyone know which school she must be referring to - and where their
records may be located?
Many thanks,

Many thanks to the kind listers who have sort me out, especially Jane who
has talked me through the process. I have now got the references that I need
to order the film. I'm going to keep everything crossed in the hope that
I'll find my Archie!
Best wishes,
Helen
