1. Re: Photos of Kelty and Dundee [1]
Hi Ken Thank you for the generous offer. I am interested in the photos you have of Kelty. Not so sure about the Brass band but the rest would be great. I will eagerly await further instructions. 2. MAYFIELD, COWDENBEATH - WATSON family [1]
I am a new subscriber to this list. What a marvellous asset it is. My great grandparents, William WATSON and Ann Mitchell BALFOUR, lived at MAYFIELD, COWDENBEATH in 1906 prior to emigrating to New Zealand. I am hoping someone can tell me about Mayfield - was it the name of a house or farm or was it a district in Cowdenbeath? William was listed as a farmer on the shipping list. A farewell dinner and presentation (of a gold fob watch) was held in his honour on Friday 25 May 1906 at the Masonic Arms, Cowdenb
3. Re: Birrell [1]
Hi Mathew I have been trying to get your e-mail address to check some informaion with you. Mary O'Neil suggested that I contact you but she never gave me the address! I have a Janet Birrell who married a John Wishart somewhere near Aberdeen (?Cults). They had several children one whom was my ancestor - Christian - who married James White/Whyte at Strathmiglo. Janet and John appear to have moved southward having children as they went. I suspect that they may have come from Strathmiglo, as there are qui
4. ROSS/THOMSON Cupar [1]
Anyone own John ROSS who married Rebecca THOMSON in 1868 in Cupar? I would be interested in hearing of his background. Rebecca Malcolm THOMSON was the daughter of William THOMSON and Susan (nee MALCOLM) and born abt 1847 in Cupar. Cheers Janine Heggie

6. [SCT-FIFE] Prepend FIFE [1]
The way I use my email I have no problem keeping emails from lists separate. Personally I'd prefer the FIFE prepend not be used, especially if there is any risk of losing space for descriptive headers. However I'm not adamant if there are compelling reasons to include it. 7. CROSSGATES-?? Parish [1]
Doug McLean, Part of the village of Crossgates (with an s) was at one time partly in the parish of Dunfermline and partly in the parish of Dalgety. Not sure if this was the situation in 1851. Joanne Adams
8. Widows' names [1]
Wasn't it the usual practice in Scotland for widows to revert to their birth names? I've been trying to follow up Olive's suggestion that a Janet Kilgour could have had a daughter with the same name from a first marriage and then remarried John Brand. If that were the case, wouldn't she have remarried with her birth name and not Kilgour? Illegitimacy of course is a possibility, but I haven't been able to find a JK without a father's name.

11. Is this because of the Scots blood ? [1]
I have been reading the messages from our people on the east coast who are being hit by the horrendous storm there which is killing people, causing tremendous damage - and (excuse the humor) flooding basements and cutting off some phone lines - but.... not the lines connecting our people to this list! Now I ask you. What is it that drives these hearty souls to remain at their computer, sending messages to this list, when all hell is crashing around them? Is it because they are genealogists? Or is their
12. Re: Tombstone Humour [1]
Hi Folks: A little more tombstone humor. What follows is the inscription on the tombstone of one Jockie Bell, a Borderer of some prominence, interred in the late 1600's at Kirkbankhead Churchyard, as recorded in the Rammerscales Manuscript: "Here lies Jockie Bell of Brackenburn under this stone Five of my ain sons laid it on my wame Man for my meat and master for my wife Lived all my days without sturt or strife If th
13. Re: Agnes/Nancy [1]
Walter, this happens in other places, too. I have a booklet of "nicknames" commonly used in all English speaking countries. It does complicate our search at times because it sometimes leads to be searching for non-existent "other" names before, as you say, "the penny drops", we"see the light" and realize they are all one and the same. That's why we should never take just one bit of info but need to get as much as we possibly can on each person in our line. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I am
14. Re: [SCT-FIFE] SUBJECT LINES [1]
Margaret, it looks like the SCT-FIFE addition will end Sunday night. Most are against it. I had it there when the list first started and removed it when most objected to lack of space on the Subject line, but now it was been brought up again - so I am letting the list decide. And it looks like most do not want it. So it looks now like it will disappear Sunday night as [SCT-FIFE] on that Subject line. Talking about Autumn, I wish we had it. I think Summer is never going to end here in Sacramento. It is

Debbie, Actually, the * part of my message came from the FamilySearch site at http://www.familysearch.org/sg/tl/2910.html This is part of the Source Guide. 18. OCCUPATION - SURFACEMAN [1]
Can anybody tell me what a SURFACEMAN was? My dictionary definition is 'a person who works on the surface, as on the roadbed of a railway, or in a mining or military operation'. What would be the most likely for my William TURNBULL who was a surfaceman, of DAIRSIEMUIR in 1874 - railway or mining? Hope somebody knows the area and can help. 19. Parish Records [1]
For Patricia Patterson Ronnie Scott: Perhaps I could come in with my tuppence worth on this topic. During the course of my reading, I have seen mention several times of the fee levied to have a baptism recorded in the parish records. Unfortunately, I can't be definitive on the subject but roughly, what happened was that, around the end of the 18th century, someone thought up the bright idea to charge to have a baptism recorded. However, given the general poverty of the population, this became a q

I did NOT ask that you give your addresses - instead, I specifically stated NOT to show your address. I was only passing along a suggestion from a list member, but if you feel this is "dangerous" to show what part of the world in which you live , such as "Australia"., "Scotland", etc., then by all means unsubscribe, - and since you did receive a welcome letter from this list which gave iinstructions ono how to unsubscribe , since I have several times posted iinfo on how to unsubscribe, then please unsubs

Hi Donald, You'll probably get hundreds of answers, but we'll probably all say much the same thing 1. Get hold of any family members or friends who knew your parents or grandparents and who are older than you are, get them talking and take notes or record them - any thing at all that they remember - doesn't matter if it isn't totally accurate - there is often a grain of truth in the weirdest family story 2. 24. Glass & Lessels & Stevens [1]
To Margaret Wilson, After sending for the marriage certificate of 1872 of Charles Stevens & Christian Grahame Glass, I found the parents of Christian to be William Lessels (Merchant Seaman) & Janet Lessels both of whom were deceased at the time of the marriage. Their daughter Christian was born in 1850 in Linktown of Abbotshall. Charles Stevens was born in 1849 to David Stevens & Janet Reid. in Kirkcaldy. Charles was also a merchant seaman. As above, David & Janet were both deceased at the time of th
