3. [SCT-ISLAY] Hugh MCGILVRAY [1]
Can anyone find Hugh McGilvray in any census between 1851 and 1871, please? He witnessed the death certificate of his brother Alexander McGilvray, who died Portnahaven 1858 May 22. The data on the lists, Ted, is in error. There it says his brother was John. The certificate clearly shows Hugh. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thank you. Neil Cameron
4. Re: [SCT-ISLAY] Islay Inn? [1]
I am getting a kick out of these e-mails. As my Grandmother emmigrated from Glasgow to Vancouver, B.C. in 1919. She lived in Kelvin and often spoke of Sauchiehall Street! She was a McHaffie. Small world is it not? 6. [SCT-ISLAY] McArthur/McNeill [1]
Hello List I have the death certificate of Catherine McARTHUR so I have found her parents at last < big grin > How good of the GROS to put so much info on their certificates!! Catherine's parents were Peter McARTHUR and Marion McNEILL. Ted Larson very kindly found them for me on the 1841 census where they had 2 other daughters Flora and Ann. They are not in Ted's database so I don't know if they were born on Islay or not. Does anyone have any connection or information about this family? Thankyou in advance
7. [SCT-ISLAY] Re: Ontario "Islay family reunion"?? Looking for host/hostess... [1]
Hi Sue & all, I would be willing to host the "reunion." My husband & I live on a sheep farm about 15 minutes east of Guelph, just off highway 7. We have a big barn and can clear the drivefloor for use in inclement weather. We will have to work around haying and a wedding, but that should leave us lots of possibilities. 8. [SCT-ISLAY] westering home...again! [1]
In school when I was a wee lassie.... we learned all Rabbie Burns songs & poems, we also learned all the Scottish songs ever written, some were very difficult to sing too. Westering home was always a favourite because it had a bit of clout in it and we could belt it out, BUT it wasn't until the other day when I saw the posting abt it that I realised it had reference to Islay" in it, I always just sung it automatically without the words sinking in, can't believe it! Elizabeth.

Sue and Neil As a young lad (pre school) growing up in northern Alberta, Canada, I was routinely called "Doogie" or "Dougall" by a close family friend. His name, incidentally, was Hugh McDougall which might also open the question whether McDonald and McDougall are/were interchangeable ?? 13. [SCT-ISLAY] Donald Cameron (1816-1866) [1]
Especially for Ted Larson, but for any others interested, this is to let you know that I have identified the unnamed child in the Kildalton OPR shown as born to Malcolm Cameron on 31 May 1816. He was Donald Cameron, born to Malcolm Cameron and Isabella McGilvray. This is evident from his death certificate that shows he was accidentally killed, aged 50, on 12 June 1866 at Kirkwood Colliery in the district of Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. He was married to Barbara Smith of Islay and they left descendants. N

John, We have neighbours by the name of Conley, and their ancestors are Irish. Could yours have been part of the Robinson pioneers who first settled in the Peterborough area? I think they came over around 1820. They are very well documented in the Peterborough Library, Trent University Library, and probably the OGS as well as the Trent Valley Archives. Just a suggestion. I have a copy of the Glenarm book called "Hardscrabble". If anyone wants to take a look at it, I can bring it along to our Ontario I

16. [SCT-ISLAY] Re-Neil Campbell [1]
Hi Ted, That is a very good point that you have made. I have just assumed that they must have been born on Islay and that they would crop up somewhere on some records. I will go and have a look on the IGI and see if any of them show up there. There was a Helen born to a Neil Campbell and Janet Campbell in 1827 in Bowmore Parish. That would explain why I have never been able to find Neil's son Donald Campbell's date of birth. Donald, a Boilermaker(Journeyman)was married to Isabella Carmichael,in 1867,

Hello Wynne, You sent a mail out on 24 Oct 2002. I have busy trying to get a job and then working a project to setup a company with someone. I have pulled out of the company project and I am taking a break, so I decided to catch up on all the mails that I saved in my Inbox and not answered. I hope that you'll excuse this late reply - you've probably already got the answers. All the best, Simon ---- In my collection of Curries from Islay, I have the following children for James Currie and Barbara McInty

Besides Westering Home, there's also Moladh na Lanndaidh (Praise of Lanndaidh = Islay), and you'll find the Gaelic words and melody line at: http://www.geocities.com/alltandubh/M/Moladh_Na_Lanndaidh.html Lanndaidh is a poetic name for Islay, though it is said that it was originally a location on Islay. The English words are on Steve's site: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~steve/islay/mp3/ This is part of our repertoire in the Port Ellen Gaelic Choir, but we haven't recorded it yet !!
